I finally sharpened both the BAS and the 15AK, and tested them. Didn't realize it would be such a pleasure to begin to understand more about the blades as I was sharpening. Btw, as of now, I am a convex edge convert. It is so much easier to work with with minimal equipment that I have.
The usual steeling before and after use, and whacked them as hard as I could on the dead stump that did the damage before, and no more waves on the edge. AS far as i could tell the edge did not change at all... perfect...:D :D

What's that I hear......? An M43 beckoning...?...

Thanks for all the tips and help.

Eric

Congrats on getting them right. They sure are fun (and frightening) when they are working correctly. An M43? You DID know about the rule that you can't have more than 2 khuk's at one time, didn't you? Just send me the AK, and then you can buy the M43. I'll hold it for you, it will be our secret! :D :D

You do know that in order to purchase an M43, Uncle Bill must approve the place in which the M43 will reside. If, for any reason, he deems the area in your home unfit, you can't own an M43. Also, he keeps a secret list, & only approves a certain number of khukuri owners per year to purchase M43's. If you have been a customer long enough to get on UB's list, the M43's are sent out on what is called a pre-permanent basis. After so many days, the new owner must pass a lie detector test & provide pictures of the area he/she has designated as the M43's home...............very tough to pass these tests. Instead, you might just want to pass on the M43's so that some of the rest of us "concerned khukuri owners" can provide them the home & respect they need & deserve!!!!

If you purchase an M43, you will not be disappointed. They are just great all-purpose kuk's......lighter than an AK, tough as a locust post, & especially the 16.5" ones are q-u-i-c-k. The 18" M43's though are just really useable, useful kuk's. It is a big knife, but then not as big as my 20" AK, a tad heavier than my 15-16" Sirupatis & made to cut. I don't have a favorite type kuk.......if I did the others might get jealous, but the M43's are hard to beat in any size.

If you are not sure which type to try; you can't go wrong listening to Uncle Bill. He is definitely the Head-Hog-at-the-Trough concerning all things khukuri!!!!!!!!!

I try to use and sharpen and oil my different khuks equally. Can't have one getting "jealous" and thinking I'm not treating it as the others...

And sometimes it does indeed seem that an initially stubborn edge does improve greatly with a little use and subsequent sharpening. I suspect that sometimes they are not quite alligned. The final result is well worth the effort. I'm a convex edge convert too, and least for knives that are not totally dedicated slicers. I've learned a lot from my khuks.

He..heh… have no fear the new khukuri meister’s here! and it's too late...they are already emotionally grafted to my brain...can't be appart from them for too long.:D

When I get that M43 you can be sure it will be treated with the propper respect it does deserve. Heck, these ones get treated just about as well, if not better than, as my dogs, and they are “spoiled”! They may not get to feed on many trees (the khuks, I mean), but I’ll give them plenty of spare wood from the tip to keep them (and me) satisfied, and like my pets, each knife gets its propper share of tlc, to avoid that jealousy issue ;).

Can anyone tell me why the M43 is so popular to the extent of being an icon? I mean other than its seductive look, and the apparent fact that it is a great 'user' knife? (I may get clobbered for asking this question)

That edge: I remember reading somewhere in the forum about the different uses of the parts of the khuk blade, and the option of actually having different bevels on different parts. The recurve section for example, could possibly be ground into a flat or concave edge for carving and slicing, since it would not usually sustain heavy impact. One day, when I’m confident enough with using and them, I will experiment with this. Others most likely already have.

May the learning process never stop.

Ill be sacreligious (though I cant spell worth carp :)), and say the M43 buzz is purely purely the propaganda of a wannabe researcher :barf: The guy gives the rest of us real researchers a bad name ;) :p :D
