Battle Rat

Ok, I'm on this like a cheap suit!

If you're thinking about polymer (Kydex) there are several good makers who frequent the forums. We all offer different types of product and price ranges.

Eric has a full list and contact methods.

I however, am incredibly biased for obvious reasons, and suggest you look at: www.okuden.net

There is a fairly complete listing at www.badmojo.tv also.

In the interest of beint nauseatingly evenhanded, there are also some folks who do amazing work with leather. They too are on Eric's "list" and at the badmojo site. (Wow! that almost hurt!)

The commonality you will find amongst us sheath makers is that we are all interested in making the best product we know how. We're also a great group of folks to do business with -really! just ask us!- ;)

And just say no to tannic acid, right Oku? :)

I love both style sheaths. Nothing beats Kydex for sheer COOLness factor. There's something quite confidence building about hearing a nice, satisfying click when your knife goes into a sheath. It ain't gonna budge unless you want it too. Comes in your choice of black, desert camo, and a few other weird colors that don't seem to be quite as popular (or go as well with Rats).

Of course, there are some pretty talented leather-workers among us--our very own Leatherman comes to mind! Dwayne's leatherwork will net one about the most aesthetically pleasing pants possible for a blade. Sure, it's a matter of personal opinion, and Oku's desert camo Kydex looks quite nifty, but I've only saw one or two Kydex creations that take my breath quite the same way some of Dwayne's sheathes seem to almost every time of late, particularly since he's been putting Anaconda skin on. I understand some of his sheathes can reach near-Kydex retention levels.

If I were you, I'd get something from one of the local Kydex gurus such as Okuden or David Brown, and a leather sheath from Dwayne or whoever else's designs please you, and use one one day and another the next. If you don't want two, then you've got a long road of deciding ahead of you.

Leather for a rat? Whadayathinkin!!! The rat will eat right through it! :p

Thank goodness Oku was here to offer a safe option

Seriously, all of the makers mentioned will make you a heckuva sheath. It all comes down to personal preference and the sheath's intended usage

Buy Oku!
You can see my testimonial on his site...
Oku is the way to go for any knife sheath need!

Gee thanks for the nice words there Zal, wow, I dont know what to say other than thank you!:D :)

For a hard core utility sheath that's as tuff as Rats check out MtMikes sheaths. He made me a canted cross draw for my coot. When I got my inficoot there was a big fight and the black coot is back in the factory suit. (Highly PO'ed tho)

Don't have any sheaths from Leatherman or Oku YET,but these are in the planning stages. 2 different Busse's, 2 different carry styles/uses. All are great people to work with.

BTW the inficoot is on the EDC rotation along with a fat BA and a MS. Just depends how I feel at the moment. The ones not being worn are in my work bag along with a HR in a MtMike canted strong side sheath.

Wet

Thanks for the kind words Wet -- I made some of the first leather sheaths for the Battle Rats, and have made a few improvements during the past year. But please, no requests for canted Battle Rat leather -- unless you're 6'7" or taller :)
And don't be deceived by all the false advertising claims about kydex/concealex sheaths. After you get by the coolness and military applications factors, they are, after all is said and done, just PLASTIC :D Well, maybe hi-tech plastic, but....
Honestly, if you're taking your Battle Rat to Iraq, Afghanistan, Columbia, or the Philippines, order up a mess o' plastic so you'll look cool like the rest of the commandos. But if you're headin' for the mountains, get yourself some honest to Davey Crockett LEATHER.
(if you want anaconda you'd better hurry, I hear Dwayne is damn near busted on the Big Snake :( )
If you want just plain old good looking, tuff-as-Rats leather for a lifetime (no snake !), drop me a line,
MtMike

As opposed to "low tech, dead cow"? ;)

Oooh, hey Mike, ever made an Oku skin sheath?? ;) plastic, feh:p

Come on guys....I think we can all agree that for the tip top knives a custom-folded cardboard rig is the choice....maybe even with some heavy duty nonopaque plastic self-adhesive reinforcement :D

Snort! titter, LOL!!!

Captain,

No matter who's product you decide on, yer gonna be a happy camper!

We trade "shots" but I'll let you in on a "secret". We do share collegial respect, particularly where craftsmanship is concerned. (No joke, I've seen some of the work my leather sewing bretheren do and it is outstanding.)

I'll be the first to admit that leather has superior aesthetic qualities. It has a warmth that polymer (plastic, tactical tupperware, soulless hydrocarbon deriviative) cannot match. Of course, Kydex has some advantages too.

Since I feel that I'm dangerously close to hijacking a thread that requested information and turning it into a debate about the superioriy of various sheath materals. I'm gonna stop right here.

In fact, I think Zal has offered sage advice.

Peace Be the Journey!

Hey! Now your cutting in on my new start up!:grumpy: Don't forget folks, for premium cardboard sheaths, just Send me your knives and I will take care of them for you. please note that this is a lengthy process and the knife may not be returned for about 30 or 40 years. That's just the price of qulaity custom work Price doesn't inclide tax, title, licence, insurance, actual sheaths may not even be made, your mileage may vary, no statement is binding and the owner of the Cardboard sheath company may not be held responsible for his own actions.

What Oku said :D
Andrew -- we're all still eagerly awaiting the IPO of your new Lynch Cardboard + DuctTape Combat Sheaths Corp. Too bad it wasn't ready for Blade ;)
Mike

Now we got two cardboard sheathmakers! I know Alpha's work is outstanding with the strapping tape lacing and the superior posterboard welting. But I am curious about Andrews non-opaque plasitc self adhesive system!:p

Glad you like my idea Oku! Now, when does Mike get the first shipment of test skins?:D

Now, Alpha,,,,,,,,wheres my complimentary sheath for all this advertising????:)
