im getting tired of worrying about, cleaning and oiling my 5160 carbon blades constantly. is there any other options... beadblasting, bluing etc..... will these eliminate the corrosion problem altogether. any info on options and how they look would be appreciated. also, is there anyplace that specializes in doing these finishes. thanks

5160 Carbon steel, is steel regardless, and will rust. Blueing, parkerizing, and bead/sand blasting will not eliminate regular maintenance, although parkerizing and blasting does allow the steel to hold onto protectants better than with a polished finish.

Black-T and the various other finishes work well...you can get some bake-on Teflon moly finish from Brownell's and apply it to a bead blasted blade with really good results, too.

Bead blasting is a rust inhibitor on whatever blade to which it's applied (any grade of stainless or carbon steel). A little surface rust doesn't degrade the performance of a blade and on a "working knife," isn't really an eye-sore. A collecting knife is different.

I'd work on good knife maintenance techniques and regular applications of Tuf-Cloth.

the finish on busse knives looks pretty awesome...epoxy???
is there a place that will do the finish for me. beadblast, bluing or epoxy. also, do these procedures destroy the edge.

Bead blasting would destroy the edge. You would have to resharpen your blade. Most any machine shop can do bead blasting, or you could ask someone in the custom knife forum here for help.

Bead blasting still has to be oiled/wiped down, it just gives a rougher surface which traps and holds the protectant a bit better than a polished surface.

Walter Birdsong & Associates does Black-T, and there are several other brands like Amour-Tuff from Wilson Combat.

Another finish that is gaining ground is Boron Carbide by a company called BodyKote.

The aforementioned Baking Laquer from Brownell's is quite easy to do, as is cold blueing. If I can do it anyone can ;) .

I like the blue paste from G-96. www.g96.com

You can do a search here and find a ton of info.
