Beads on my Sebenza Lanyard

I just received a 1998 Large Sebenza in the mail today and noticed that the lanyard has cylindrical beads on the ends of the cord.

Has anyone ever seen this before? They look interesting, but they make it impossible to remove the lanyard without cutting it!

The original owner of the Sebenza contacted me this morning: it turns out that he added the beads to the end of the lanyard.
