Hey Guys, I just wanted to throw this one up on the wall for a bit. This is the bowie that (I am so honored to say) got best hand-forged at the MKA show.

It's edge quenched 5160, fluted guard and ferrule, flame box elder burl from Mike Ludeman (WSSI), and funny little pommel nut...all hardware is 416. Everything is satin finished except the wood that was taken up to 4,000 grit polishing paper from K&G.

The very pretty photo was taken by the fine folks at BladeGallery. And in NO way shape or form a sales attempt...the nitty gritty information is there (bladegallery.com) with more pics at different angles.

Thanks for looking :)
Nick

A very well justified award Nick. The wood is amazing also. How about a close-up of the handle?

doh, you beat me to it Gouge :D thanks for the kind words, it is MUCH appreciated!

I was just fetching this when you must have posted. It doesn't show the whole handle, but a little more detail. There's obviously a little distortion over the monitor.

Thanks!

Nick that's awesome and congratulations on the award. I like the way the filework fades out on the side of the guard. That's some kind of knife, and it's what I aspire to - someday. :) Thanks for the inspiration. Have a great week.

Purrfection could be described as the "Cat's Meow"! And, from you, Nick, I would have expected no less!. Sandy P.S.--Wounded item is in shop. S

Nick,
I love the blade. Also the angle of the guard and butt cap compliment each other perfectly. You know I always notice nice handle finishes! I wish I had your talent for design.

Nick alled me to hold and admire this knife at the Montana show last month. It looks even better than the photos. You just dont win "Best forged Knife" award without putting in the extra time and talent. The finish on the blade and fittings is amazingly perfect. He is well deserving and should be proud. The funny thing is that of the few knives he had on his table there, this one wasnt better than the rest. Any of them could have taken that award.

sheesh, thanks for the kind words guys! :)

It's more than awesome to hear such things from friends/peers.

Some of you saw this knife in Atlanta, but I had some finishing to do on it. The stabilized wood takes on a cool effect with the polishing paper.

If you want to see a fabulous finish, that's HARD earned...check out Dan Farr's knives. WOW  It's a "knock your socks off" finish.
And NO, I'm not just saying that because of his compliment...he deserves that.

The fluting I really enjoy. It's not that hard to do. What works for me is to take a set of dial calipers and scribe a two lines around the edge of the guard. Then just file/sand within them. It takes time, but if I can do it, anyone can. *Not according to MS Greg Neely ;) *

One of the judges told me that I might have gotten best fixed blade of show with it had I not canted the guard. His idea was that it broke the flow...and I can see what he meant. But on the other hand...I liked it :p :p :p "would'a, should'a, could'a"...LOL

Thanks again guys...you really made my day!
Nick

I love every part of it Nick. The blade is clean and balanced. The wood is breathtaking but the detail is outstanding.
