Whats the best method for stripping the blk epoxy off a BK-7 ? Also the best way to polish one ?

Stripping is easily handled by chemical paint strippers available at a local home improvement/larger department stores. If you see one labled "aircraft paint stripper" or some odd thing, or if it says it will strip epoxy finishes you're good. Heed any safty precautions on the can, alot of those strippers contain MEK which is some really nasty stuff. Most important thing is you wear proper protection, this stuff will make epoxy fall off your blade like wet noodles so you might want to avoid getting it on yourself, wear nitrile gloves and lay the blade down on a sheet of cardboard or newspaper instead of holding it while you spray, and wear eye protection. Usually the stripper will work on contact and in less than 5 minutes the coating should more or less fall off the blade.

Stripping: I bought the basic ACE Hardware paint stripper, the kind that you brush on - two applications and the finish on the blade was history. I left the finish on the metal under the scales; figured a little protection there would be good. I didn't polish the blade, as it gets used a lot anyway.

Polishing: back on Oct. 5th a forum member named Rupestri put up pics of a BK7 he modded, and posted this:

Fully stripped and polished blade.
Handle slabs refinished in a dark gray textured finish.

Polishing was done with a customized Craftsman 4"X32" benchtop belt sander with 6" disk sander. The disk was converted to a 6" 3M hook-it II velcro pad with an additional foam pad called an "interface pad" used for sanding curved surfaces on auto bodies.

thx - cpr

Well, dang. Sorry, but whatever I did, didn't work. I posted a question over in tech support for directions on how to link to older posts/threads. Once I see the answer there I'll edit this post with the link.

Ok - 01/06/07 - let's try this again:

I wouldn't recommend it, but i got insect repellent on one of my becker blades and yep it stripped the coating right off. Intentionally i use paint remover and emery cloth.
