One of the Opinels that a forum member sent me to try out. It has been real dry here so I practiced a little fire making in the park Someone took a tree out and there were quite a few chainsaw chips and such laying around, To good a chance to pass up. It took about ten scrapes on the steel to get this going, The Opinesl blade throws some serious sparks.

I've always wanted to try one. Maybe some day I'll pick one up and give it a shot. Seems like a pretty cool little handy blade for the money.

I have also noticed hog good a spark I can get with my Opinel spine. I really don't like the knife that much so it gets used more as a striker, than a knife:o

I totally don't understand your title udtjim ???

I like the opinels a lot. Unfortunately I misplaced mine, one that I bought in Germany last year, someplace. They kind of suck as a camping knife because of the swelling issues, but man are they one amazing EDC pocket knife. People friendly design, excellent blade profile (full flat + convex), super sharp point, great steel, cut like a laser and a handle that is very comfortable.

The ring lock is cool for its traditional value but sort of sucks when trying to open and close it with wet hands. Plus, occasionally they pop off on you. The tiny little tang, coupled with thin stock to begin with makes them relatively vulnerable to breaks if you used them for things you shouldn't do. I feel a lot more confident pushing an alox SAK blade than I do the opinel.

If somebody came up with essentially the opinel blade but made it a full tank fixed blade knife and kept it to $40-50 or so, I'd be all over that!

Been Packing a Opinel. As in to carry. I guess it is not much to pack. I believe it weighs an Oz.

I have never had a problem with them swelling (IF) I use them everyday but after being stored for a while, it can take a pliers to open it the first few times. Guys have told me that oil in the groove will stop the swelling pretty well. They sure come sharp and hold a pretty good edge. I use it mostly as a striker too. I use only convex edges in the field and only carry sharpening stuff for that edge. I even convex my Moras that go hunting with me. I have about four of them that I convexed on my belt sander.

It would be cool to have a Opinel fixed blade.

Once again I lost my pocket knife , a slim BUCK. So for the last month Ive been carrying an inexpensive Opinel. I have a habit of sticking the point in wood. So now my Opinel has a bent tip. It is also bulky. I dont like it as my EDC but its sharp. Someone once posted a video on how to cut down saplings with a small knife. The first time I did it was with this Opinel #6. It amazed me how easily it went.

No doubt that in a pinch, it will get most jobs done. Having the best equipment will get things done, being good with whatever you have may often serve you every bit as well. Of course being good with good equipment is the key is the best of all worlds.

I edc an opinel 6, it is an awsome little blade. Humidity is always pretty low around here, so swelling has never been an issue. I also have an opinel 12, which fills the roll of my dedicated back-up knife for a multitude of reasons ( I plan on making a thread about that later).
