Benchmade Axis lock stiff opening/closing

Hi guys.

I have a Benchmade Mini Presidio 525 and when I applied a decent amount of pressure on the blade (to check for any horizontal play) the opening and closing became stiff. Prior to this, the opening/closing was very smooth and if pressed down on the Axis lock, the blade would just drop (when opened).

Has this happened to anybody? What do I need to fix it? I'd like to avoid sending it in for warranty if possible since I live in Australia. Knife is not new if that matters.

Edit: I'd also like to add that the knife no longer "auto retracts" into the handle by itself when you close the blade and it is near the closed position. Hope I made sense

There is now definitely something wrong with that knife and I would not trust it until it is serviced at Benchmade. Sorry.

I'd try loosening up the pivot until the blade is loose enough to move freely, then carefully tighten it back down to where it was.

Send it to Benchmade, they have rocking customer service, don't risk boogering up a good knife by playing frankenstein.

Since you live in Australia shipping would probably take a lot of time especially once it arrived at BM. I've no doubt that Benchmade would fix it to your complete satisfaction. I would try some non evasive things before I boxed it up and sent it on it's way. Loosening the pivot screw and carefully retightening is a good start. Is the blade centered in the handle when closed? If it isn't then open the blade and put side pressure on the blade pushing TOWARDS the side the blade is offcentered to. If the blade is centered then open, reloosen the pivot, apply pressure to blade one side then the other side, and then retighten again. If that don't work it is possible to disasemble completely, but if you are not comfortable doing this then I would pack it up and send it on to Benchmade and begin counting the days until it's return.

Remember that if you disassemble the knife, you have technically terminated the warranty. Also remember that if there is anything wrong with the lock and you do not have the expertise to recognize it and fix it properly, you have a real safety hazard there.

Thanks everyone. I don't have the right sized torx screws to loosen it so I'll have to send it in to Benchmade.

Personally, I would just take it apart, and check the locking system carefully, and clean out and lube up all moving parts. Something may be jammed up in the lock.. All in all i would take it apart and give a good old clean up. Its easy enough. I know of a few people myself that disassembled their benchmade knives. They did not alter anything, so when they sent it in. They still had no problems with the warranty...

I wanted to see if it was a common problem. If it was common, there would have been guaranteed ways of fixing it. In this case, I would have opened it. I didn't want to risk voiding the warranty if it wasn't guaranteed in the unlikely event of reassembling it incorrectly or losing some part.
