Several folks on rec.knives have posted this rummor. I have it on high authority that they are planning to do this. But, it'll be a year or maybe two.

Good news anyway.

> I would die if this happened tomorrow!

Then I am glad that it's not going to happen tomorrow.

Would next Monday be ok?

Chuck

Wooohooooo!! All right! I was thinking that I would have to pay double the retail on an auction to get one, now I can just pay an astronomically high retail price. Hey, its worth it.

Works for me.

In the meantime, has anyone here had any experience with Dragon Forge balis?

It's true. I have it on high authority.

Now, what is true is that they are planning to do this. It is, of course, possible that plans can change.

Don't worry about your "investments" in older knives. They are redesigning and the new ones will be different. So, the old ones will remain collectibles.

Chuck

It is confirmed. The rumor is true. It will be a good while though.

Nice to see so many people interested in Balisongs. Never really did find out why they stopped production of those knives though...

Chuck, you definitely bring good news. Even if we have tons of them here, I sure would love to get my hands on one made by Benchmade.

The official explaination is that the tooling for the Bali Song line, much of which is twenty to thirty years old, has become so worn that it no longer produces consistent quality products. The sales volume on the line does not justify the investment in new tooling.

Apparently, those sales numbers have been reconsidered and new tooling is, in fact, justified.

Perhaps, the recent surprising interrest that these knives have attracted has been considered. Perhaps, there were certain other, shall we say "influences."

Furthermore, butterfly knives are very much part of the Benchmade/Pacific Cutlery/Bali Song Cutlery company history. The love of these unique knives goes all the way to the top at Benchmade. And, as they say, "where there is a will, there is a way."

The current plan as it has been suggested to me is to return these knives to production about this time next year. Unfortunately, Benchmade has a bit of a history of schedule slippage. This is, to some extent, driven by their strong commitment to quality. Furthermore, I know that BM is working on quite a full plate of other new products that promise to be better selling and, therefore, more profitable. Resources may have to be diverted. As a result, it won't surprise me to see some delays.

Friends, there is light at the end of our tunnel, but it may be a ways out.

yeah, I've been in touch with Benchmade, it won't be for a while it looks like.

I'm a serioius collector trying to get my hands on an original Balisong. Can anyone help me? Refer me? Any help is appreciated!

Ah... another new player. Glad to have yet another butterfly knife enthusiast.

A dentist with a butterfly knife... I'll bet that makes the old semi-annual cleaning a bit more exciting, eh?

The original Bali Songs show up for sale from time to time. Watch the new auction section.

This is GREAT news!!! Ihad long since given up hope of new Benchmade Bali-songs the 2 that I have are second to none in quality. They have a guaranteed customer right here waiting for their return!!

I guess they had problems with the machines becoming antiquted for producing the bali songs, and they were worried about quality issus, so they just stopped making them. Why they didn't just buy new machinery is beyond me, but what do I know...

I spoke to a representative at Benchmade last week, and he said the new line is slated to come out in the next year. That's what I heard. I dunno how high up this guy was-- he was doing phone followup on some service requests I had, so he might have just been a grunt.

But I liked his news, so I'm happy...

Bali Song lovers, UNITE!

I'm so frustrated right now b/c I feel all of this bali song love and good bali song karma these days, and my one benchmade bali song is in Oregon getting tightened up, and the one I got from professor isn't due in until next Friday. So I've been flipping staplers like knives. I attached myself to the wall. But it's better than nothing, right...

my 2c. I'm tired. goodnight all.

Leave the poor stapler alone and try your Leatherman PST.

Now, as to why Benchmade hesitated to retool: it's very expensive. Initially, they didn't think this rather niche product had enough sales volume to justify the tooling costs. I don't know what changed to change that decision. Perhaps they figured out a way to tool it for less. Perhaps another new product they're planning with greater volume needed some of the same tooling thus lowering the Bali Song-specific tooling costs.

Then again, maybe it was just a matter of all our "whining" finally paying off.
