Benchmade RSK - smell

Hi, I'm new here. :)

I've bought my first real folding knife, a Benchmade RSK. I noticed that the blade came out of the box with a slightly oily residue, which isn't a problem at all. It also has a very pleasant aroma to it. I was wondering where that smell comes from, is it the steel or the mystery residue? It smells kind of like faint orange peels. I've smelled it before in other materials, like carbonless copy paper.

I haven't the heart to EDC this knife to work*, since it's so new and I already EDC a Bucktool with a SAK Blackchamp. Besides, I'd like to know what that residue is so I can apply more of it after cleanings with solvents, and keep it looking and smelling like it's original condition. I'd consider EDC-ing it once I learn how to properly care for it.
* work occasionally has me cutting open UPS parcels

Thanks in advance. :D

I find Militec to be unpleasantly stinky, and definitely not like orange peels. So I'd be surprised if that were it. Then again, I guess we all smell things differently.

I think Militec smells good and so does my brother. To each their own I guess.

p.s. Is that Uncle Floyd?

Glad to hear your brother smells good! ;)

Seriously, though, Militec smells pretty awful to me, too. However, I seem to recall a gun lube that smelt citrusy... Break-Free CLP, perhaps?

I don't think Break-Free smells citrusy. Maybe it was Eezox or one of those unusual ones. I do know that FP-10 can smell cinnamony and is a terrific CLP.

G96 smells pretty good -- almost like banannas.

You think the smell the original poster was noticing was Tuf-Glide?
