Been wanting one for along time and might try to pick one up in the next few weeks.

I'm looking for decent good stock quality, custom able/interchangeable parts if I decide I need something with my style.

I will have around $1200

Colt, Bushmaster, S&W, I have heard great things about these three...

I wondered also if its better to just build your own, maybe cheaper and comes out the way you want it......

2 companies I have shot and enjoyed is LMT and Noveske. I personally own a Noveske N4 love this rifle. Great parts. Really I always say it's really a matter of what you want to do with the weapon. If you are just wanting to fart around with and shoot tin cans then some entry level weapons are fine. If it is your primary home defense weapon I suggest upgrading. Even more if you plan to take classes with it and plan to ask it to perform under extreme conditions.

There are a number of quality makers these days (I don't know that there's a "best") - BCM, Colt, Daniel Defense, LaRue, LMT, Noveske and Sabre to name a few. I'd have a look at those companies and see which offers the features you want at a price point that's acceptable.

I personally think that BCM is the best "bang for your buck" in the AR world these days. To me, to use a "knife" analogy, BCM is the "ESEE" of the AR world - outstanding quality at a reasonable price backed by a great company.

I strongly agree about BCM - great stuff.
Don't worry about the lower's engraving, concentrate on a good bolt, barrel and LPK.
The rest is just about customizing the weapon to your needs.
You will likely end up wanting to try out different grips, stocks, optics, etc.
just buy quality the first time around and if you don't like it, someone else will. ;)

ok i'm going out on a limb to suggest something within your price range.

get the S&W. i like the magpul edition in black.

colt: paying for brand mostly
bushmaster: good quality but undifferentiated from the masses imho

also, look at DPMS and Rock River, bang for the buck.

if i were spending my money it would be the smith with a bushnell eotech-clone (made by l-3com).

I have found that the best AR 15 may not really be an AR 15. I have one of the new Bushmaster ACR rifles, and it seems to be much more capable than an AR. This is the MagPul Masada, brought to market by Bushmaster.
The stock not only is adjustable for length, it folds to the side. The caliber can be changed without tools, just change the barrel.

Rock River!! I have owned 15 different platforms and the Rock River is best bang for your buck! Ive owned from a Del Ton to an LWRC. Spend 800-900 on a RRA and spend the rest on AMMO not a $250 quad rail or anything else just ammo and a few mags!

check out the idiot's guide to the AR-15. it's on page 2 of this subforum, 30-something pages with lots of links and really good info.

I like my bushmaster.
Great gun for the money.
So many good companies there right now.
Springfeild M1A, better gun, for a little more money.

Try MGI Military.......They have lower receivers with interchangeable magazine wells, letting you change calibers.

Man take your pick, spikes, bcm, stag, s&w, I have a a spikes and like it a lot I use stag upper reciever in left hand for my builds. C3 defense ha good stuff as well. A lot if choices all good depends id you want forged or machined parts. I would try bcm or spikes I think they will build it the way u want.

I am a S&W guy. I love mine. Really there are alot of good companies out there. You just need to figure out what you want to use it for and shop accordingly.

I also am contemplating my first AR- I want to purchase a complete lower and then worry about the uppper. A few buddies of mine have been heavily steering me towards Stag Arms- anyone have any experience with them?
