Looking at the microtech autos... it needs to be something reliable, with a good blade.

I would say the Scarab would be ideal. Useful, robust blade, auto in and out could come in handy in an LEO situation, and it has a glass breaker built in, what more could you ask for? Ultratech would be good too in clip point, but the Scarab is better for this role i think.

The best duty Microtech is the LUDT..........Followed by the Socom Elite

Has a window breaker and seatbelt cutter . Bad knife

Most Police Officers I know think the Dieter is WAY to big for a duty knife, but it is a strong knife no doubt.

I know one guy that carries a SOCOM Elite, but the most popular I've seen is the Pro-Tech TR-3. Light, Utiliatarian, and the replacement cost is minimal for a knife that's going to get beat up...

I agree that the LUDT is a good choice also, or Jeff Woodard's Fer De Lance. All nice knives.

I think they have a smaller version of the Dieter. Well yeah its still a kewl knife.

They do have a smaller version.., and I assumed you meant the big guy....:)...sorry...

You mention in your post that you are looking at MT's, I have 3 or 4 MT's. I don't have the experiance that some have with auto's. But, were I looking for a hard use auto, check out the Severtech. It aint purdy, but it is for heavy use.

I live in Brazil and carry and auto most days, my Severtech is the go to auto.

Ira makes two great recommendations. I have an auto LUDT and a manual Socom Elite (a manual, I might add, that can open 2-3 times faster than the auto!!!) and LOVE them both. I can only imagine how sweet an auto version of the Socom Elite would be. Microtech makes great knives and certainly makes great AUTOS!

Best of luck and take care! :)

Basically I do not like autos for some reasons what would require too long time to describe completely. Especially taking into consideration that I did it at least some times here and all archives are available. In short words – in my opinion cool look factor more than likely is the dominating reason to choose auto over good one-hand manual opener.

However no one coin has single side, it is possible to find also some auto advantages if someone is determined to do it. If I would choose an auto I would take a long, careful look onto new BENCHMADE – Mel Pardue Model 5000 Auto Axis. It is free of main auto disadvantage – the lack of ambidexterity. Jus release the axis lock with either hand and the blade pops open, with the reasonable speed, btw.
Now push the manual safety level forwards and your folder turns into some kind of pseudo fixed blade. This is because the safety stands behind locking axis and it is no possibility to release the lock even if both omega springs would break simultaneously (the situation really hard to imagine looking from both statistics and common sense viewpoint).

The thin high performance edge is excellent cutter, I’m underlining this specially for folks complaining about BM allegedly thick edges. The blade saber grind is very high, about 3/4 or more of entire blade width.

The aluminum handle is very comfortable (no wonder, it is Mel Pardue design!), more or less it looks like the beefed up version of Griptilian handle. Surface is checkered quite aggressively, however the way what practically doesn’t affect handling comfort. Easy to operate with gloved hands. Might be pretty coarse as to pocket, I would recommend rather belt pouch carry.

Here is mine. It is certainly not my best photo but the knife as itself is OK.

Edited to grind down some stylistic coarseness
