Best blade length

Legalities aside... What is your favorite size?

For me, anything between 4" - 5" for folders. For fixed blades, 6".

No less than 7" for Fixed blades with 10" to 11.5" being ideal for me.

Folders: Blades can be anywhere from one inch all the way to about three, so 1-3".
Fixed: I'd say 4-6" for most utility tasks, but since there's a 3" limit where I live, most of the fixed blades I carry are about 2.5-3". Still very useful, however.

3'' for folders. I made a rule for myself recently. If the blade is longer than my left hand middle finger, I don't consider it for EDC. It comes out to about 3.5'' but I just use my finger.

Edit: If I carry a folder over 3.5'' then I'm doing it for a specific reason. For example, my work folders are over 3.5"

Folders I prefer minimum 3.5-4.5 in most cases. Fixed blades, 6inches minimum and I do love a good Bowie.

That's just the sizes I prefer.


I don't need a folder bigger then about 3-1/2 inches,

...any task that requires a bigger knife then that calls for a fixed blade IMO.


Fixed blades in the 4" to 5" range are ideal for most cutting tasks,

...though I do use bigger blades for bigger tasks.

Folders, same as you. Fixed, depends on blade style. Also depends on mood of the day. Sometimes nothing beats my FBMLE, other days it's the Spyderco Dayhiker, or even the Mule with the nice new scales on it. And anything in between.

My fixed blade EDC and my folder EDC blades have 5" blades. The fixed is my Swamprat Ratmandu and the folder is my Harsey T3.

However My favorite for carry in the woods and such has a 10" blade. If I'm going heavy then I take my 18" H.I M-43 kukri.

My favorite overall is my 10" G.L. Drew bowie.
