Best carry method for a VTAC???

Guys,

I guess I am old fashioned...

I like the 'sheath' that comes with the Cold Steel Vietnam Tomahawk, but I think the 'sheath' for the VTAC leaves a lot to be desired. I just love the CS VT sheath, but hate the VTAC sheath. I like to be able to put a tomahawk sheath on a belt. I want to be able to deploy it fast if need be.

How do you folks carry a VTAC? Do you like the sheath? Do any of you have alternate sheaths? How do guys in our military carry thier VTACs?

Pictures would be great.

What don't you like about the VTAC sheath? I purchased one for my SOG Fusion Tomahawk, and I love it, save for the brittle plastic internals.

Once I replace the internal support piece with something more flexible, like nylon or kydex, it'll be perfect.

You really have me confused with the 'not being able to wear it on a belt' part. Mine sits very comfortably on my waist.

Brian Okuden designed this sheath for a SwampRat Crash Axe. It looks awesome to me.

OK, maybe I exaggerated somewhat... maybe even a lot...

The part I really dislike is that I think it is too slow to deploy in a hurry...

I guess I don't like having 2 snaps that have to be unsnapped before it can be removed from the sheath. Then, after the snaps are unfastened, I think it is convoluted to get it into action...

Let me elaborate...

I am right-handed and like to wear it on the right, over my right-front pants pocket. I wish it had a single snap closure that made it faster to deploy one-handed, since that is the way I remove it from the sheath.

My method is to unsnap both snaps one at a time with my right hand, and then slide my hand under the flap to grab the hawk. Now remember, the hawk goes in the sheath with the spike to the front, and the haft is hanging straight down. So... I grab the hawk so that my pointing-finger is between the spike and the haft, and my other 3 fingers are between the blade and the haft. My thumb wraps around the inside of the hawk head. After getting this grip, I pull the hawk up and out of the sheath. But now the hawk has the blade facing to the rear, and I am holding it with the head up, and the haft down. So now I have to shift the hawk from one hand to the other a few times in order to move it around so that you end up holding it the right way to actually use it.

Try it, you will see what I mean...

True. It was made "jumpable", so quick-draw wasn't in mind. If you make a new internal support, as I'm planning, you can switch it around so the blade faces the front when it's on your right side. The outer case is the same on both sides, which is a plus.

Granted, that doesn't solve the slow-to-draw problem. My only thoughts would be to make/commission a custom kydex scabbard like the one above. I would've gone that route if there was something commercially available, but the Fehrman was the only thing I found(and even with it's drawbacks, it's LIGHTYEARS ahead of the joke sheath that comes with the Fusion...).

Brother Holy (brother Roller???),

Very good response... what you are saying makes sense...

Actually, the CS VT sheath isn't really much better, I suppose...

Thank you for your comments!!!

I got a Shoulder Sheath Lite from Robert at www.SurvivalSheath.com for my SOG Fusion - its pretty secure, comfortable and fast to deploy one handed. It is a bit of work to get the hawk back IN the kydex (must use both hands), but its a small price to pay for the ease of deployability.
