i don't know how to advise you on whats best for low budget, because your question is vague as to style/use.

first, go to wal-mart.
i got a Gerber Paraframe, Kershaw Echo, and Schrade X-Timer, all of which i'm overall pretty happy with...

the grand total for the three: bout $55.00

They also have knives cheaper, and more expensive, but the main thing is getting to check out each one and see how it feels to you.

Don't buy a cheap Swiss Army knife (SAK) they just ain't worth it.
You can find varieties of Victorinox online or at the Remington store, well equipped, quality SAKs for under $40.

Remington also has a variety of Magnum brand knives. I understand these are made by Boker. My store had around 8 models for $9.99 on clearance. They have other cheapies as well there, and many expensive models, again feel around for what suits you.

Lastly i suggest going here: http://www.discountknives.com
They have a huge selection, and whether you want plain cheap (Tomahawk) or inexpensive quality (CRKT) or Spec-Ops, Cold Steel, SOG, Ka-Bar, Camillus, etc... they are a great place for great prices.

Good luck!

Many of you know i sell fossil shark teeth for a living, and my wife surprised me a few weeks ago with a knife as a "for nothing" gift, well, im not really a good person to give a knife to as a gift, since i generally dont like a knife unless it has a pretty high price tag and is of exceptional quality. Well, i was all ready to pretend to love this crappy knife that i just knew would suck, but, turns out, i really like it, because its a surprisingly well made knife, and she got it off Ebay for $11!!!

Its a Lightfoot "Urban Shark" made by CRKT, smallish aus8 blade, but VERY sharp. Surprisingly thick liners and excellent lockup, with ZERO play and a perfectly centered blade, and smooth action too, did i mention it was $11!!! :) The reason she got it for me, and the reason i mentioned i sell shark teeth is because on the non clip side of the handle, there is a small engraving of a shark, and even better, on the clip, is a perfect little engraving of a shark tooth! So, its perfect for me, funny thing is, she bought it because of the shark tooth on the clip, she had no idea it was actually the design of a well known custom maker and, as it turns out, this knife is amazingly well made for a cheap knife, i was really shocked when she told me she got it for $11! So, i would say that if you look around you really can find a decent knife for about $10 on Ebay or elsewhere.

But, having said all that, here are my choices. Under $10, well, my shark knife comes close. Under $20, i have to go with the Vapor. Under $30, definitely the Chive, i mean come on, an all steel framelock with generally no play, centered blade, good lockup and the speedsafe opener, all for about $25 or so, you just cant beat it IMO. Under $40, hmmmm, ill go with Jason and get some sort of CRKT Carson knife, theyre pretty nice knives for the money. OK, finally, the under $1,000 category, well, i have to go with a Mayo TnT. Oh, wait, wasnt there an under $1,000 category? :)

OK, im going to add my own category, seriously, if you want the absolute best knife for $300 or less, Mike Obenauf, well, i lied, it'll actually run you $325 but for $325, you are honestly getting a $600 knife, and i have seen a pile of knives that cost 2, 3 even 5 times as much that werent even in the same league as his knives are in terms of quality, fit and finish. Get one, you'll thank me. A carson will run you $500 or so, Mike's knives are just as good, in fact, they are both as perfect a knife as you can get at any price, its just that Mike's are much cheaper, doesnt mean i wont buy a Carson, just means i can afford to buy MORE Obenaufs! Im just so impressed with him (Mike), i'll shout it from the rooftops, or even hi-jack a thread slightly to tell people, if it saves just one child, it was worth it... :)

OK, im done, sorry i got carried away, been a strange night. ;)

I'm going to go play with my Obenauf now...

Under $5: HSN!!! 112 knives!!! That's only $1.68 perknife!!! You can sell all of the small knives for $10 each and keep this cheesy looking fantasy Stabmaster Bowie for your collection of crap!!! :)

I've got to quit watching that show.

That's a good story, Megalobyte. Now, I am going to tell my wife what your wife did for you! Maybe it will spur her on to do some wonderful, unexpected things. :D

These are very decent knives if you don't need one-hand opening or fancy handle materials.

I'd get the Opinel in carbon -- see for yourself how well a simple carbon steel can perform. Use the mouse pad trick to sharpen it.

Sometimes you can get Schrade Old Timers for around $10 at Walmart. 1095 carbon steel, cuts like a razor and very easy to sharpen. Probably a more convenient pocketknife than the Opinel.
Get an Old Timer one way or another (and make sure it's carbon; some of the big ones are stainless). You should have at least one in your collection.

For the under 10$ level, sometimes you can find knives at garage sales for cheap, ie. a buck 110 for 5 dollars, even at the salvation army stores.

The lid of a tuna can is pretty cheap. Tape up half the edge and sharpen the other half.

Did anybody mention Mora puukkos yet?

I got an Outdoor Edge Wedge for $15 including shipping. I love it.

Up to 40$: Spyderco Delica or Endura. Can be found even up to 30$.
Up to 10? Check knifezilla.com, they have all sort of stuff there and some pretty clones as well. Can't recommend any, though. ;)

Frank,

I believe that's 115 knives for the price of my last flea dip, to include our choice of these fantasy boo-ees (seriously man that's how that smegger pronounces bowie) up to 60 pounds of steel for only a fraction of retail value. Friends honestly now where are you going to find value like that in a retail market. I'll tell you what I'll show you your value in only four frames. (when the hell did a particular design or model become a "frame")

Seriously frank you had me rolling there.

for 40 bucks you can get certain spyderco and crkt models.

for 20-25 i think either some kind of SAK or the kershaw vapor would be best

anything cheaper then that i really don't know, probably some kind of SAK

You can check ebay for good deals sometimes you might be able to find a good deal on a knife or if you don't mind getting a used knife ebay is good for that too.

Smokey mountain has great sales sometimes you might be able to find something good

also discountknives usually has the lowest prices on knives,

So far for me the best nice for the cheapest price would be the kershaw vapor. You can pick one up at Wally World for $20.

It pays to cruise the department stores for knives if you happen to be there. I had to go to Sears today and while I was waiting for something, I checked out the tool department. I found Schrade Uncle Henry stockmans --with a free sharpening stone-- on clearance for $8.97. I don't really need one, so I only bought one. :-)

Take it easy,
Bob Scott

A great bargain I found on Knifecenter.com was the Timberline Mini Pit Bull designed by Greg Lightfoot. It is a pretty small knife for a fixed-blade, but it has a sweet thickness, which makes it feel very very sturdy, and also a really nice hollow grind to counter the thickness. I think I got the two that I bought for under $25 each. I know it was under $30... If I lost one, I'd rush out to buy two to take its place. I don't want to ever be without it now that I've discovered it. Even the sheath is really good.

I see that some here have suggested Opinel knives for the low-price category.

I held a knife once, in a friend's shop, that was either an Opinel or a knockoff of one (I'm having a hard time remembering if it possibly was one of those Coghlan's crappy things in the green blister-pack).

At any rate, who here has an Opinel and can vouch for the structural integrity and strength of those things. They look AWFULLY FLIMSY to me (besides looking ugly as hell, like a tube of preparation H or something). Do I have this right: the ring at the base of the blade rotates to lock the blade open?? Are there metal liners inside the wooden handle? How strong is the joint? Aren't these things FRENCH?!

That reminds me... Conan O'Brian was doing his "In the year 2000..." skit tonight with Andy Richter as his guest. Conan said, "In the year 2000, we will discover the difference between FRENCH vanilla and ordinary vanilla. The difference is COWARDICE." LOL!!!

Seriously, though. If anyone has good stuff (or bad) to say about Opinel knives, I'd like to hear a case made for (or against) them. I don't have any, myself.
