Best Custom Defence Folder

In all due respect to Emerson, I have the CQC8 and think that for a self-defense situation, I wouldn't want anything smaller. I think the CQC6 had a 3.25" blade and the CQC7 a 3.5" blade.

This short of blade, plus the ~$750 or so you are going to pay to find one, isn't worth it.

Plus, if you use it in a situation where the police are involved, you are going to lose the knife, probably forever. As bad as it sounds, you also never know when you may have to "ditch" the knife, too.

Get a Benchmade AFCK or one of the other great knives in that category (Cold Steel Voyager, etc). 4 inch blade, good geometry, and you won't stay up at night because you had it taken away.

I actually agree that perhaps a custom defensive knife might be too expensive as a risk when a Benchmade, Spyderco or Microtech would easily do. Where can you get a CQC for around $750, Doug?

I'm a firm believer of the AFCK. However, since you asked for a custom, that vote would have to go to the Kasper Fighting Folder.

Hi Crash,

Am I to understand that this knife is to possibly protect your life? If this is the case then Im confused. First there has been a spotting of Factory knives on this Forum (Bad Poster's). Secondly, while I understand that everyone one looks to cut corners, a blade for personal defense of you and possibly loved ones is not the place to do it. Of course those that would recommened those factory knives previously mentioned, obviously underestimate the value of their life.

Rules:

1) Buy the very best you can afford.

2) Buy something that you will be able to carry with you at all times while in areas that may become a "zone" of contention.

3) Train with the knife. To many "experts" out there have little or no real world experience with a edged weapon in a fight (Yes I have had a person pull a knife on me, fortunately for me he was one of those "Experts").

4) Understand that the law makes no differentiation between weapons when carried concealed. Gun or Knife, your still going to jail if caught. That has to be balanced against the "real"threat not a perceived threat.

5) If your not going to train with the knife, either carry a gun or dont go where you need a knife. Fact is, many of us out there do not give an edged weapon the respect it deserves. To many view a edged weapon as posing a minimal risk to them. Consequently, they will be more likely to try and take it away. Which to you means, you better know how to use the knife and be willing to use it. Do you really posses the intestinal fortitude to take a knife and kill someone with it. Close enough to blow their last breath in their face, have their blood all over you, smell that awful bile smell associated with a stomach wound, or listening to that pink froth as it gurgels forth from the lung wound. Ill stop here, Im getting hungry!

The point to all of this is, pick the knife that best suits the situation you think you will find yourself in, carry it always, train with it daily and dont skimp on price.

Now with this said, what do you want the knife to do, specifically. Once you identify a specific goal for this knife, then we can help you identify the knife that may or may not work for you.

Also, forget looks. Its the end result that counts. You recieve no points in a survival situation for "looking good"

Kasper Fighting Folder! Period.
Okay, that is subjective and based on the knives I have fondled, which are very many and include that one. But, I personally put it at the very top of fighting folders (and I bet it wouldn't work half bad for mundane stuff too

).
I told Bob Kasper about a month ago, that if he could put a better style lock on it, that no one could touch that knife. As it is, Crawford does an excellent job, but I would take the knife out and ride it hard and make sure that every thing locks up tight before you find out the hard way. Liner locks are prone to fault, and someone on another forum had a (dull, forunatly) KFF collapse on his fingers while stabbing. This is not to put down Crawford, but more the tempermental liner lock. Just be sure to test yours out good, and send it back if it needs adjusting.

I am saving up for a KFF, but dang, that is a lot of money for a folder on my college budget. Until then I have to stick with my M2 AFCK and my EK Commander.

Ok, i have to agree with everything Les said on carrying a folder as a weapon. My opinion is
-that you should carry what ever folder you are comfortable with and you handle well
-that you can deploy quickly
-that will be as effective as your ability to effectively use it allows
-that you keep razor sharp(a dull blade in a knife fight would make a bad situation much worse)
-that your being familiar with the knife is more important than anything else listed.

In my opinion if you are carrying any kind of knife (from a 12" Brend #2 to a key chain special) for main line self defense you value your life very little. Go buy a .45, .357 or 40 S&W and shoot it often.
