I am going to by my Brother-in-law a Multi-tool for Christmas. I am hearing that Victorinox is the most reliable. What say you?

I really like my Leatherman Wave, with the nylon sheath...Sells for way under $100.

The is no objective "best" multitool. But you should get a lifetime of service and good warranty work from any of the top brands - Leatherman, SOG, Victorinox, etc. Its the little differences which make one model subjectively "best" for one person but not another. SOG is big and has the offset gear which magnifies gripping power, plus removable tools. Victorinox is highly refined and smooth opening. Leatherman has the entire size spectrum fully covered, from the little PS4 to the ST 300 and Surge on the other end of the spectrum. Some multitools have the blades, file, etc. on the outside for easy access, some on the inside. So it all depends on what floats your boat.

a long with what powernoodle said, i think it's important to know what type of person your brother-in-law is. does he currently carry a pocket knife or multitool? how large is it? does he wear jeans a lot or slacks most of the work week? does he work in an office or in a shop/warehouse, or outdoors?

I just picked up a Gerber Recoil auto plier just out of curiosity and I gotta say I'm diggin' it a lot. Don't know how tough they are yet but we'll see......

I'm really liking my SOG Powerlock. It has most all the tools I was looking for and they all work fairly well. Although, some could use some refining. I used my SOG Powerassist before my Powerlock and I loved everything about it except the lack of tools, so I upgraded to the Powerlock... but it almost feels alittle less precise then my Powerassist... It doesn't always like to lock its tools in perfectly every time unlike my Powerassist which had no problems at all. Probably gonna send it in to SOG and have them look at it, but other wise I love it. A couple of things to note though: the file is kinda lame and the scissors aren't the greatest either so it those are some of the main things he might want then I look a something else for sure. When I was looking for a new one I was super close to either the Leatherman Wave or Surge (more so the Surge). Really, the only reason I have the SOG Powerlock is because I found it on E-Bay brand new for $40 dollars shipped for the newest model of the B-61 in Black Oxide. If I get the locking problem fixed I'll love it just as I did the Powerassist; if not well... I got it $45 dollars cheaper than you can get it for anywhere else I've seen it on the internet:D

If you don't know his habit and this is a gift, I'd go with Victorinox simply because it's the most refined and shiny.

That's actually a pretty dang good idea. If it's a gift and your brother-in-law might not quite know how to appreciate less "purty" m-tools because their built mainly for work then ya, definitely go with the shiny one which would be the Victorinox; and don't get me wrong, it's a really good multi-tool as well!!

Spirit or Wave . If the Dude is refined , he'll dig the Spirit , if he's a ruff and ready type , the Wave .

There are exceptions, of course (me being one :D), but that's a pretty good rule of thumb.
