What's the best road atlas for the U.S.A.? The more detail, the better. The more information, the better. Maps of major cities would be nice. Topographic information is good. Waterproof, laminated pages would be nice. Preferably fairly durable.

Thanks.

It seemed to have more detail and bigger pictures than my old Rand McNally. I've never seen a road atlas that really gets down to street level, they're generally for getting from city to city or getting around a large metropolis. I've always found that an Atlas get's you in the ballpark, but for more detail you need dedicated maps of the area, a Thomas Brothers guide or these days a laptop and a program like StreetAtlas USA. By boss swears by his StreetAtlas USA and the USB GSP receiver be bought. Real time mapping in any rent a car. We're sales reps that cover the Southwest, so maps are an integral part of the job. HE's even got a GPS receiver and mapping program for his Palm, but it think that's more of a gimmick than a useful tool so far.

A couple of years ago the wife and I went across the USA with an atlas from Barnes & Noble and MapQuest. Cost about $15. We didn't find any major mistakes. We got local maps for fine details.
