Looking for opinions on this. I have used several hatchets in my time, broke a few also. This is what I use when I can drive to my camp site.
But now I am looking for a tomahawk to add to my backpack for small chores.
Weight is a concern..... a 8 pounder is out of the question.
From what you guys have used, what is the lightest weight that will work for chopping limbs and branches for camping?
I am thinking at least a 3 in cutting edge, and maybe 6 inch wide head. A hammer head is something I am thinking of also.
So what minimum weight and size works for you?

I am not sure what the weight of it is but the Estwing Hatchets seem to be pretty ideal I would suggest the rubber handle as opposed to the leather stacked washer version due to over all beat up and not worry about it kind of deal. when you look at what contractor's carry on their belt it's usualy an Estwing. when I look for a serious tool I look to what the pro's use so I think it would be a great choice by the way they have a model called the campers axe it would fill the bill perfectly with a 4 inch cutting edge

Mountainwind--- If the Search function works for you, I'd suggest doing a search on the Cold Steel Trail Hawk. I've read a lot of positive things about them. I have one (I paid around $20) but haven't used it enough yet to comment. I wouldn't want a tomahawk much heavier or bigger than the TH if I was carrying it a lot. http://www.coldsteel.com/trailhawk.html

Blairdoc-- I wanted to buy a Sportman's Axe (hatchet size) a few years ago but couldn't find one with a rubber handle. I think they only come with leather handles.

Try David Grant's Tomahawks-Traditional to Tactical 2007 Paladin Press. It has most of the available hawks and descriptions in it and is reasonably priced in a fatigue pocket format. When I got a copy for review, I was a bit skeptical but I've really used the hell out of this book as a ready reference when talking to others about specific hawks. Ditto on Cold Steel Trail Hawk to start off with.

My Best
Dwight
