Hi everybody,
I've some question here.
What is the best steel to make a chopper?
Is it vanadis4E or M2 or D2 or O1 or anything else

I made a large Bowie /chopper with 5160. I have thrashed on that thing batonning through oak, cutting a small tree down , and brush clean up. All I can say is that it is extremely tough, and seems to hold a edge very well. Matter of fact it takes a pretty scary edge in my opinion.
Whenever I decide to make another chopper, 5160 is what I plan on using.
I don't claim to be as knowledgeable as some here, just letting you know what has worked for me.

Yes its not about who is more knowledgeable here. Its more to sharing and learning. Anyway thanks V8r for your point and I also plan to make a chopper for those activities..

okey thank shqxk..CPM 3V is that catogorized in the high end steel to compare to the two steel you mentioned above?

How does S7 do for a chopper? Can anyone comment on its edge holding and toughness? I have always been intrigued by it.

I've used S7 on small axes and it's super tough. With the right heat treatment and edge geometry it can take absurd amounts of abuse. The thing about S7, though, is that, based on my experience, it won't have quite the edge retention as some of the other steels mentioned here, and it also requires a bit more care to heat treat properly - namely good temperature control and a proper soak.

With proper heat treat people wouldn't notice different in performance (edge holding, toughness etc.) between those carbon steel and CPM-3V.

I'm a fan of 52100 and 80CRV2 because its edge durability is really great and they are forgeable. You also can draw back the spine for better shock absorb.

I don't know if there is an overall best....I think it depends on several factors - heat treat capabilities, if you need stainless or carbon steel, what you are chopping, cost, etc...

Here is a cleaver in 52100:

A chopper in L6:

And a bowie in 1084:

Then after the moose antler test here they are finished out:

I have also used 5160 and like it too:thumbup:

Next order from Aldo I'm gonna try 80crv2:)

Yes actually its too common tittle to discuss.Forget to mention about price range or type of work 😅.Anyway as long as anyone could share their opinion and experience its ok 😃.
Include the picture. Many thank for Bruce for your e.g. up there.thank you.And nice bowie there
