As I said I would, here is Jerry Hossom's knife that won the "Best Hunter-Utility" award at the Southeastern Custom Knife Show last week.

High praise indeed coming from Dr. Lathe.

What has me troubled is the use of Damascus (any damascus) on a knive that has "hunting" in it's name.

I have even stained ATS-34 during cleaning of hogs (ATS-34 is NOT my favourite steel, definitely).

O.K., our bad-ass fighters and utility-knives COULD also come into contact with blood, but -let's be real honest here- IF the knive comes in contact with (human) blood, it's mostly because we're all clumsy bastards, not because we're the big bad knive-fighers we'd like to be. - Only speaking of myself of course ;)

Still, I agree, this hunter is an extremely nice knive and would make any collector proud.

Great knife Jerry! Congratulations on the award. I love the mosaic pins and ironwood scales. I also like the damascus. Whose?

As usual, I did not have to see your name to recognize your impeccable style. Thanks for sharing that pic with us Terrill.

Man ain't it great.....! I actually got to hold and play with that beauty on Sunday afternoon. "Mr. Jerry" was generous enough to give the some lessons in grinding and knifemaking in general. His work is just wonderful. Thanks for letting us view a work of art...!

Later "Possum"

I certainly agree with others concerning the aesthetic appeal of that knife. I like the way the blade edge comes below the handle far enough to protect the fingers from a work surface, a good "utility" feature, and of course the shape of the blade makes for a beautiful skinning tool.

But I also second the comment above about damascus. Do real "users" ever win "best knife"?

And thanks to everyone for the nice remarks. The steel is Devin Thomas' Stainless Damascus in his Vines & Roses pattern. The handle is an unusually nice piece of Desert Ironwood.

I've never understood why some knives win awards and that has always been true in the case of my own. All I can ever see are the flaws. I think there is no question, however, that a Damascus blade makes winning easier, even though it is easier to work and vastly easier to finish than a good mirror polish. I fully credit Devin and a fallen tree for this honor...

In his literature Devin comments that a number of serious hunters (meaning those who handle lots of animals) find this steel to be very functional in the field. Personally, I've never known anyone to use it.

Thanks again,

Hey, congratulations, Jerry!:D :D :D

It's great to see that you're finally started to get some of the recognition that you so richly deserve. Bravo zulu.

It is great to see you win in this category again, Jerry. That knife is a beauty! Congratulations! I am glad that a "folder" did not win the Best Hunter at this show :p A folder won best fighter. You might have to turn one of your fighters into a 16inch folder and enter the Fighter category next year. :D
