Translated into native Nepali language, it's "kaphar hunnu bhanda marnu ramro" (better dead than live like a coward).

This saying is presumably common among Gurkha soldiers. However,
I wonder if is applies to the Gurkha community in general.

It is true, the Gurkhas are a warrior race. It has been generations since the last great war was fought by these brave people.

Does the saying still apply in the present day?

Compared to most of us, these guys are fighting a war every day. Life in the military, especially when deployed in the field, would be a harsh existence for most of us in the First World. No TV, A/C, MTV, comfy bed, or even indoor plumbing. But, it would be a relatively comfortable experience for most of these guys. Hopefully, Nepal will stabalize soon and things will get better.

The saying still applies and I don't thing there's a decent combat unit anywhere that doesn't have a similar saying of their own.

The Gorkhas are a combination of different tribes. They are so called because the first bunch came from a small kingdom named Gorkha.
