A friend of mine is getting a custom knife made.

And it is going to be made of BG-42.

But the maker he has chosen is not familiar with the heat treating of BG-42.

So, my friend is looking for makers he can talk to about heat treating, and heat treating methods to get the most out of the steel.

Can you help?

He could try Chris Reeve Knives, who use BG-42 exclusively in their folding knives. I have heard that Greg Lightfoot lokes the stuff, and I believe Tom Mayo uses it in his custom work on request.

I would try posting in the Bladesmith Forum.

I think your best bet is to go with the way Labtrobe recommends heat treating BG-42. If someone knows something about heat treatment that brings out the best in a steel, I think they would be hesitant to disclose that information.

A link to CR's view on heat treatment of BG-42.
