Where can you purchase BG 42? Is there a heat treat profile on it? I know that Darrel Ralph uses it and Greg Lightfoot, but at what hardness?? How much better is it than ATS-34?

Just curious...

Here is how to obtain a technical info sheet for BG-42 steel. Go to this URL:

http://www.timken.com/latrobe/technical%5Finfo/backup%20copies%20of%20fax%20pages/bearingfax.htm

Type in a fax number, and the info will be faxed to you.

Here is the method for finding this info for other alloys. Go to this URL, the main metallurgy site on the net.

http://www.mlc.lib.mi.us/~stewarca/metallurgy.html

Then click on ASM International. Then click on ASM's Alloy Digest Web Faxx, then enter the alloy for which you wish to search. You should be at this URL now:

http://asm.micronexx.com/search/iatoc

This gives you three different types of BG-42, all made by the same company, Latrobe Steel Co. You can spend $25 here, and they will fax the data sheet to you (look at the sample data sheet on the site to see the data contained therein). There is a cheaper way to do this, as most manufacturers will supply the info free. Go to this URL:

http://www.asm-intl.org/www-asm/matprod/matp_0.htm This is reached by clicking Directory of Material Suppliers on the ASM home page.

Click on Metals Suppliers Online, and you will go this URL:
http://www.suppliersonline.com/ click on Go For It, and then click on Find a Supplier, and enter Latrobe Steel Co in the search box.

Now, you are here: the Timken Latrobe steel home page:
http://www.latrobesteel.com/technical_info/index.html click on search, and enter bearing steels, and you will end up with this URL: http://www.timken.com/latrobe/technical%5Finfo/backup%20copies%20of%20fax%20pages/bearingfax.htm

This gives you a selection of steels which you can have faxed to you free. There are some steels whose data sheets are in the Adobe (.pdf) format, but these are generally the newer ones, not BG42 Hope this helps, walt

BG-42 can be purchased from
Latrobe Steel Co.

They told me they had some bar stock on hand, otherwise there is a minimum order of 400 lbs. which at about $13 per pound plus shipping is a lot of dough. When I spoke to Latrobe they indicated that as they were making some in sheets for another client they would be able to sell me 100 lbs of the same stock they were already scheduled to produce. But when it came down to them putting that in writing so I could confirm the order, they reverted to their original 400lbs. minimum. Which as I'd planned on getting the 100 lbs. of steel, meant that I had to scramble before years end to place an order with Zapp in Dortmund for some A2, D2 and M2 HSS... Therefore I'd say if you're planning to do business with Latrobe, get it in writing first, then plan on getting it...

BG-42 is 440C modified with the addition of 3.5 % Mo and 1.2 % V for added wear resistance and hardness retention at high heats.

Yesterday I just got my Tru-Grit catalog and it has listed that they sell it also. It cost $17.25 per foot in 5/32. And $18.50 per foot in 3/16. And it looks like you can order as man or as little feet as you want.
