Bg42

I too would be interested in such a comparison.I currently carry a Benchmade 710 with a 154CM blade.Love the knife and it takes a great edge but thought it would hold it longer than it does.I'm hesitant to buy anything else until I know what other steels will hold as good an edge a lot longer.

If Cliff Stamp reads this post, perhaps he can pontificate on your question.

A couple of years ago, I had a Sebenza that I liked that had a BG-42 blade. Then I was introduced to the King of D2, Bob Dozier. His grinds and heat treatment of D2 is pretty dang good! And for me, anyway, D2 holds an edge alot longer than BG-42.

Now I am on the S30V bandwagon: Very similar carbon content with D2, but supposidly with greater edge retention and toughness than D2. Now I have a Sebenza with a S30V blade, Rc 58-59 and just recieved yesterday, a small # 2 Obenauf with a S30V 60Rc blade. I haven't done enough cutting with the Obenauf yet, but so far I am impressed with the S30V Sebenza being a longer edge holder than the BG-42. The RC on the Obenauf is 2 points higher than the Sebenza, so I am expecting good things from the #2.

Don't forget 52100, either. There are some great bladesmiths out there that do a fantastic job with 52100.(And it may be easier to re-sharpen than D2 or the Crucible steels)

Good luck!
