Please give information on BG42. How does it compare with
440C? (Edge holding, ease of sharpening, etc.)
I am a part time folder maker who is always looking to
improve my line. My customers are usually happy with 440C,
but is BG42 better? I have made three knives with S60V and am
testing them, but I am not sure my customers will tollarate the difficulty of sharpening, so I don't think I will go to S60V.

BG-42 is a great steel, i have great respondces from customers about edge holding and corroison resit, i have not used the s60v used to be 440v ithink? but s30v is proving it self more all the time and i am using it more and more. also there is nothing wrong with cryo, treated 440c. i use it on a lot of culinary knives and dont get any complaints. the old saying, if the shoe fits?

Old relyable! 440C has always been a good steel and always will be! BG-42 is awesome stuff as well! You can't go wrong with any of them!;)

There are a couple of differences between 440C and BG42 that will make a noticeable difference. The BG42 has the addition of 1.2% Vanadium, which will make for better edge holding. BG42 generally is hardened to a little higher Rockwell, so it will be a little harder to sharpen. I believe the Carbon contents are about the same though. The thing I like about BG42 over most steels is the fact that it is double vacuum melted. This gives you one of the cleanest steels available. 440C takes a very nice finish, but BG42 should finish even better.

Yup !, what Danbo said. I love BG42, it's harder and has longer edge holding qualities. 440C is good but a tiny bit softer. S30V has more the qualities of BG42 than S60V. Some people are saying that S30V out performs BG42 but my experience thus far says they are about the same. Bg42 has out prformed most of the stels I have seen. It is hard but doesn't chipe or ding the way the "hard" CPM stels do and it doesn't ding the way a softer 440C steel might after hard chores. You can get really smooth, scary sharp, clean edges out of it. Like a 40C in appearance but stronger when performing. Unlik say a 440V ( a harder steel) whcih can chip very easily and has a rougher almost gritty edge sometimes. Try it out, you won't be disappointed. Take care.....RDT

Thanks a lot guys. This gives me some direction. I will
try BG42. It's really nice to have you out there to bounce
things off of.
