I’ve recently moved back to Texas. I checked the link “ Some excellent on-line searchable law resources” and took the easy way out by going to the state by state listing. I’m considering getting a BK-3 and keeping it in my vehicle, within reach of the driver’s seat. The blade is seven inches long. It looks more like a chisel or sharpened pry bar than a knife to me but, I’m not sure what it looks like to Texas LEO’s. What kind of risk am I taking and would it be lessened if I just stated up front, that I was carrying it, if I were pulled over?

I'm no kinda LEO, but I'll tell you one thing. I grew up in central Texas, and whenever I've been pulled over and had the LEO ask if I had any weapons, I'd say 'No sir, but I am carrying a pocket knife.' Making the distinction between a knife that you're carrying as a tool, pocket or otherwise, and a weapon is pretty important.

Now, what you might have to use it for in the stress of the moment is another thing altogether. It's just like tire thumpers and D-Cell Maglights. We don't buy them to use as headknockers, but they would come in handy in that role.

Feel free to agree or disagree, by all means.

James
