I felt lucky last year to come across a barely used BK15.
I've wanted one for a bit, and I Love it's larger sibling.....

Unfortunately the handle scales just aren't wide enough for me.
I really wanted to like this knife.
Figured I should try modding it before letting it go on the exchange...haha

Here is how it started.

Then I thought adding the same cool hardware that I did for my 62 would look nice.......and adding the same brass liners to beef it up some.

Tweaked the choil for added comfort

Can never leave well enough alone ;)

Nice work man, looking good. The black and brass contrast well. That said, the choil looks less comfortable, haha. Looks sharp and pointy.

It Is pointy.....I'm Still wondering about everything?
I stoned/honed the radius so there aren't any sharp edges, but I still might take the whole point off? Not sure if I can call it a choil then?

It feels pretty good on the first part of the diget. It's way better than before

As long as it feels good to you, I'd leave it.

Nice work! Looks awesome!

Thanks! I'm glad you like it
I'm still in my infancy of understanding knife design, and philosophy....I don't know anything.

Adding the brass liners adds a ton of weight to the handle.
I did this with my 62 as well..... It just makes sense to me.

On knives (not choppers) why does anyone want tapered and hollow tangs? I wish someone could answer that for me? It doesn't make sense?

Having the blade heavy increases the torque one feels.
In my mind the blades should be light, and the handles heavy. It changes the ballance and the rotational inertia.

I can open my hand and the knives just stay in my palm.
*Plus the increased thickness just feels good.

Yep. I prefer the handle to be heavier which makes the blade to feel like an extension of my hand. For choppers, i like blade heavy for obvious reasons not to mention it makes it feel so natural.

Wow!
That 62, 15 and 5 is nothing short of Becker Knife porn.
I'd like to send you my BK15 for the brass treatment.

I don't have a makers/craftsman level account, so I don't think I could charge you....haha. :)

Brass always gives a nice nautical look. Well done!

Zieg

I grew up in the 70/80's when all the faucets and fixtures were bright, shiny, probably fake brass..... I Hated brass.

Once I got older, I saw and appreciated the old worn, tarnished and used look....... Just like me!

Now I love the stuff. Wood and brass really gives life to a piece.

Did you make the brass liners or are they able to be bought somewhere? I just got a 16 yesterday for my 46th birthday and Iโ€™m already itching to mod it like I do with everything else in my life.

I made the liners on the 62, and the 15.
it makes the handle considerably more comfortable.
I'm glad you liked them. Thanks.

They are beautiful..I wish I had the skills lol. Could you tell me about the screws & nuts you used? Where did you source them from and what is the size of them. Thank you so much. I have some new scales coming and the brass hardware would look good.

Actually adding the liners is easy. Just trace out the handle shape onto the liner material, then cut and file to shape....

The hardware I use is actually trickier. If you look closely there is a cup washer under the head of the screw. It's countersunk (tapered) to fit the screw on one side, and flat bottomed to fit into a Counterbore on the other side.

I machined a Counterbore (flat bottomed pocket) over the holes in my scales to fit the cup washers.

These are Amazing ways to hold scales on knives.
Idk why makers don't use them more? They hold with a more even pressure (especially with wood), and I think they look classier!

I can't find the link that I posted with the hardware information. We have Soooooo many Bk62 links.
I'll keep looking. (The cup washers are from an amazing canadian hardware/woodworking company called Lee Valley) I love that place, I'd buy everything they sell, if I could.

I did a concept of my style of sheath for the BK15.
I still need some longer brass hardware, and some final sanding, but I'll probably wear it like this for a bit.

Group shot of some I made....
