Hi,
Does anyone have one of these? How well are they for last ditch self defense applications? Thanks.

Jon,

I don't own one but have seen them over at Laci's place last time I was there.

They look pretty good, and useful, though my preference was the La Griffe by Fred Perrin..

I happened to speak to Laci this morning, and he will be in NY for the show, sharing a table with Fred Perrin. If you get a chance to go, you'd see some interesting items, to say the least.

Hi,
Thanks for the info, do you know when and where exactly this Knife Show will be? I am leaving for NY thursday on an unrelated trip. Thanks.

Jon,

I believe it is this weekend, so you are in luck my friend.

Tell Laci that "Blues" sent you and enjoy the offerings.

Take a good luck at Perrin's stuff.

I think the show is at the Coliseum or nearby at one of the hotels within a few blocks. I'm stuck in South Florida and won't make it so I haven't been paying close attention. I know some of the other forumites are planning on attending, and there is a thread to that effect posted somewhere.

Check by setting your browser back a few days.

The New York Custom Knife show starts this Friday at 12 noon at the Sheraton Hotel in Manhattan at 7th Ave and 52nd St. It opens up at 10 AM on Saturday and Sunday.

I have one of these Neck Babies by Ernest Mayer at Black Cloud Knives and I like it a lot! I can't carry it here in Cali because technically it is illegal, but I have carried it while out of State.
It is very quick to draw and index because of the pistol grip. It is pointy and solid in the hand. I usually teach people to use a tool like this as a "get back" weapon: You quickly draw it, jab it firmly into the perps ribcage or other handy target and push them away, trust me, they will "get back".
Keep in mind it is 1/4 inch thick so it is not a sharp artery slicer per say, but a stout poker and mild cutter. It is designed to cause maximum pain. The thickness causes more trauma to the area jabbed than a thin tool that might go in better, but not hurt as much. This baby hurts when you get jabbed with it! Think of it this way, what good is a sub-two inch blade gonna do anyway if you do poke someone? You will cause some tissue damage, some blood, but it ain't exactly gonna throw someone into shock to get jabbed in the arm (unless, of course, you get *really* lucky....). This Tanto Baby is designed to cause immense pain, rather than bloody tissue damage.

The super-stoutness also makes it a great tool. Once, my buddy needed his tire cover removed and couldn't get it off. I pulled out my stout Tanto Baby neck knife and pried that puppy right off without even a hint of damage, not even a scratch to the finish. This tool can be very complimetary to a folder, because it does all the things that a folder doesn't do.

On that note, they are no longer being made by Black Cloud knives, so I have one of the few in existence. I can't legally carry it, so it is sitting in my safe. I just had it sharpened by Ernest Mayer himself, and it is in pristine condition. If anyone wants it, email me an offer, because as much as I like it, I just can't carry it where I live without risking a felony.

Blues: when is Laci going to find a new maker to pair up with, or make his own designs? The UUK is a really, really nice "specialty reverse" fighter, the Jaws4 influenced me a lot, etc. I'd like to see his designs available again.

Jim,

Laci does design stuff, but others make them, as you know.

He still has items by John Greco, and some by Fred Perrin that I saw. Also by Larry Chew.

Why don't you give him a shout upon his return from the NY show?

His # is 888-421-2147

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the informationg to all. I did make it to the show and all I can say is WOW. I was seriously in heaven, although I could not afford any of the custom pieces (I had about $80 beans on me

I did get to look at the knives and give them test drives. I saw Bob Terzuola, Chris Reeve, Allen Elishewitz, Laci Szabo, Bud Nealy, Les DeAsis, Ed Fowler, Mel Pardue, and the list goes on. I was so overwhelmed, because I had only known these knifemakers through their works. Wow, again. I ended up picking up the Tanto baby from Laci, and it has Larry Chew's stamp if you will on there. Does this just mean Laci design this one and Larry did the handwork? In any case I had a great time and really think that anyone who is in the area should go and mingle with these great makers. Thanks again for the info.
