Black coating on Blur blades?

I've got a three week old 1670OLBLK and the blade coating comes off even with amazingly light use.

What is the coating?

That doesn't right. Could you elaborate for us? A picture would be a huge plus. Are you sure it is coming off? Or is it just marks on the dlc wich is common on all dlc type coated blades? What are you cutting specifically?

The coating is a tungsten Diamond Like Coating. Very hard stuff. I've cut aluminum cans and been able to buff the metal marks right off with almost no scratches.

The coatings usually hold up very well. Mine has done great with loads of hard use. I assume you bought this one new (with it being 3 weeks old). Could we get a pic?

have u wiped it down with a rag and some light oil? if might have abrasion but It shouldnt "come off"
I hacked up some cardboard with mine and it rubbed but it's good now

I was looking at a Olive Leek with a black blade at the sport store. I always check before I buy them. I noticed the black on the blade had some funny marks, I ended up scraping off the DLC from the blade with my fingernail. It wasnt bare metal underneath but a dark purple shade of black. I handed it back and suggested that they dont sell that one to a customer.

Being that Ionbond does the DLC Coating for Kershaw, I would like to see pictures also...

Jack19, if you can, please post pictures of the knife. This subject has come up a few times over the years, but no one who has had one, has ever posted a pic of a DLC coating flaking off a blade. I'd always been suspicious that previous posters may have had a counterfeit knife that had some sort of painted on coating. Others where the coating supposedly came off after cutting through an aluminum can (bare metal showing through where aluminum scratched the coating), or something similar, turned out to be aluminum deposited on the surface of the DLC.

Here's a pic. It's not a matter of it falling off, although I guess that's what happened, but light abrasion took this down to bare metal on it's first use; top of the blade near the tip on both sides.

I'm not trying to be critical of Kershaw, or the Blur, I have an S30V and pre-ordered a Carbon Fiber154CM. Frankly, I think the Blur is almost the perfect working EDC knife. The only reason I posted was to find out the type of coating on the blade so I can determine what to use to touch up/protect the exposed metal.

It's S30V. The DLC is largely for cosmetic reasons. I wouldn't worry about touching it up or protecting the metal.

That Blur is not S30V.. only the stonewashed blur is that I can think of. This blur is Sandvik 14C28N stainless steel.. I'm sure it would be fine to leave alone..you can oil it to prevent rust.. I touched up the DLC on my blem blur with a sharpie.. looks pretty good.

Oops, my mistake. I misread what he typed under the picture, thought he was talking about THAT blade.
I guess sometimes I need to read... more... slowly.
