Has anyone used the new "Black USA fighting knife" by Ka-Bar? The specs are the same as for the USMC Ka-Bar except it has kraton handles, a darker blade and kydex sheath. Im thinking about getting one, is it a step up from the original?
Thanks,
Michael

You might try a search on this as I recall several threads addressing the new versus old Kabars. The new ones use 12C27 stainless, the old 1095 steel for what it's worth.

hello Rockclimber, i strongly recommend you get this knife, i have my Black Ka-bar w/kydex sheath for about 4months now, the steel is 1095-great carbon steel w/an awesome epoxy black coating. I feel these are much more comfortable than the old ka-bars. The sheath is awesome. This knife has and will be my primary home defense/under my pillow knife, it is serving me well.

Thanks for the replies, I think I'm going to get one!

Rockclimber - If you do get one, let us know what you think of it as well. I'm also interested in getting one to be used 'out and about'. Thanks

Be careful and check what you're buying. The older 1095 Kabars have received a handle upgrade and blade coating which may cause confusion with the "new" Kabars in Sandvik 12C27, also with new handles and blade coating.

Don't be fooled... the "new" krayton-handled Ka-bars are still made of 1095, hence there low price, and the necessity for the epoxy coat. The original will rust if you are anywhere near water. The next generation Ka-bar without any coating is made of 12C27 (a good steel for fixed blades) that is harder and more resistant to corrosion, but also more money.

My personal choice is the Cold Steel SRK or the Buck Nighthawk. If you are willing to spend a little more $, go for the SOG 2000--a fantastic knife.
