I ended up doing three of these here recently and this is the first one to be completely finished. One of the others is Blackwood with stainless fittings and no inlay, and the twin to this one has a Rosewood handle with stainless fittings and Mammoth inlay.
Anyway, this was forged down from 1 inch 5160 and put together in a Take-down assembly with hot blued mild steel hardware.
A really clean piece of African Blackwood was chosen for the handle and given Elephant Ivory escutcheon inlays.
11 3/4" overall length with a 6 1/2" blade.
Perfect balance right at the finger.
Will be available at Blade '08.
Thanks!

nice knife Karl. will be interesting to see the other version. I think the pairing for that will work a bit better. I'm wondering too if two smaller inlays covering the front area and the back would work? also, instead of Ivory, how about nice MOP if only using one inlay? Now, the sheath also must get some interesting treatment to go along with the "arty" knife.

Darn it. I was gonna give it to you, too.
That was a funny response, Karl, but not very helpful.

I would rather wonder WHY Raymond does not care for the inlay, as you both have frequently similarly shaped knives?

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I talk to Ray frequently on the phone and we can discuss it during the next call.
I keep things light with Ray and this is not the "arena" that I would carry on that conversation with him.
I would not make that same response to someone I was not on a personal level with, like you, for example.
If you made that same comment, it would be an entirely different conversation.

I really like the knife; I am doing a knife with similar inlays right now for a friend. On the inlays will be his signature scrimshawed into it and the other will be the mascot of the University that we went to. I'm interested in knowing how you inlayed them in if you don't mind sharing your methods. I don't have a mill so I was planning on using a dremel, but I'm wondering if there is a better method of doing the inlays. Any advice would be helpful.

I really like the knife as well but would prefer something to be scrimshawed or carved into the ivory inlays myself. Beautiful design and work though!! Great Job!

I made a clamp/jig to hold the assembled knife in the vise of my vertical mill. I used small carbide burrs to remove maybe 95%+ of the void which is scribed into the handle face.
By using a GRS System 3 Graver and a Dremel with rotary sander and tapered carbide burrs, the remainder of the material was removed.
Take your time and go slowly and it can be done quite easily with the Dremel alone using the right bits and burrs.

Thanks! I will take your advice and do just that!
