I've had my Small Hunter from Neil Blackwood aka Dr. Lathe for a week now and am extremely impressed with it. It is my first custom knife and Neil was a pleasure to work with.

The knife is similar to the Small Hunter pictured on his web site, but with maroon micarta handles, and he flat ground the blade for me instead of his usual hollow grind. I was also pleasantly suprised by the filework on the spine of the blade--I hadn't realized that it would be there. The sheath is a multi-position kydex sheath that holds the knife very efficiently.

The knife carries very well in my front pocket with the belt loop removed from the sheath, and I have carried on my belt concealed by my sport coat hanging over it. The knife would also carry well as a neck knife, but I have not carried it that way as of yet.

In short, I would highly recommend any work by Neil Blackwood.

Thanks Archie,
Sorry I didn't Email you this week. I've been back and fourth to Daytona all week. I'm going to need a vacation after my vacation

It was good to do a flat grind again. I should add this as an option to all of my hunters on the website. The flat ground-hollow ground subject is always a hot topic here on the forums. Being able to offer both is probably a good idea!
Enjoy the knife and let me know how it holds up. It was a pleasure doing business with you.
Neil

I can't say enough good things about my Small Hunter. It's an utterly fantastic knife. I truly couldn't be happier with it, unless it were to suddenly clone itself in the drawer and become two. Top notch workmanship, a real beauty of a working hunter. Goes perfectly with the Small Game model, also with the Medium Hunter model (which I don't have..yet!). I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you dig fixed blades, check out Neil. You simply WILL NOT be sorry. (Man, I love that Small Hunter!!!!) If only my hunting was as good as Neil's knifemaking!

Paul,
Several things...........
First, THANKS for the compliments! I realy enjoy hearing what everyone has to say about my knives. For me, the almost instant feedback is one of the great benefits of the Forum.
Second... If you can get your knives to clone themselves, I have a business proposition for you

Third... If I could hunt as good as I make knives, I would not leave the woods and would no longer be making knives!!!!!!
Thanks again Paul,
Neil

Just want to reiterate everything that has been said about Neil's knives - recently got a medium Hunter in Talonite with Stag Handle (as pictured on Neil's site). That picture doesn't do the knife justice - it is better looking in person & fits the hand perfectly. The blade is extremely sharp and well finished - the level of finsh of the whole knife is excellent, as good as it gets! The blade shape is perfect for hunting & general utility use, the handle is extremely comfortable & does not cause any "hot" spots under sustained use. Again shows attention to the small details that make a knife rise above the pack & stand out as an exceptional tool. When you combine the oustanding design of the knife with the fit & finsh & the Talonite blade you have one of the nicest overall hunters around that will give years of excellent service. Plus it came with an excellent tooled leather sheath that will hold up under heavy use( Neil, you were right about that being some heavy-duty leather!). The only suggestion I could possibly make would be to include a short lanyard to simplify extraction since the knife rides very low in the sheath( a benefit when tromping around out in the woods). The medium Hunter in Talonite is to be highly recommended and well-worth every penny even though it is not inexpensive.

Bill,

So you're the one who got that Stag Talonite knife! I tell you what, I got a hard time deciding between the Tactical Talonite and that Stag Medium Hunter. I had been waiting for someone to do a review on that knife. I'm glad you like it.

Penguin, Frantium,
Remember what Jay Leno used to say about Doritos.......Dont' worry, we can make more

I don't want to sound repetitive but, it was a pleasure doing business with both of you! I said in another post that if I had one order for a Talonite LiteWave, I would make myself one also. Well, the order is in and now I WILL be making two. This will enable me to get more involved with the "care and feeding" of Talonite. I hope to put it through its paces and have some better ideas on resharpening.
Thanks guys!!
Neil
