Hey guys,

Thanks to a prompt from our buddy Plumberdv, I am the new owner of a web special Alpha Dorado:thumbup:. It is the rosewood scale with coated Bos CPM154 blade:thumbup:. They have been out of stock and I figgered I missed out. THanks Dave:) Question is the blade coating, I figgered it would be much darker black oxide but this is a gun metal gray and seems more the characteristic look of the steel rather than a coating. The description doesnt indicate what the coating is, so I am relying on you experts to tell me. I am guessing its the same as the new Vantage Force Pro blades since 2TonyB described it as gun metal gray. No pics to share yet-waiting for SPS.

Looks very similar to the hemitite that oregon used to display his knife(hope you dont mind I borrowed your pic oregon:))

thanks for the help

Gees Kevin, not even a picture?? :D

I am not positive on the exact recipe, but it has to be some type of titanium aluminum nitride "cote" :D

Or insert another metal in exchange for aluminum? :D

That Dave, hes quite the crafty one. ;) I hemmed and hawed on that model also, and when I decided to go for it, I realized they were still on the site, but sold out. Now I don't hesitate :D

Sorry about no pic Jim, the only pic I've been able to snap is with my phone and thats not good enough.

I really like the finish, whatever it is. I was wondering if it was Ti.

Daves the best and your right-we've learned our lesson:)

You prompted me to read on this matter and have come to think the coating is titanium aluminum nitride. Without getting long of tooth you can google it to find the particulars. Its very hard like 72 on the Rockwell C scale and CJ Buck said the blades (grind and finish)have to be perfect before the coating is applied. Its very thin .001 inch yet, protects, gives strength and smoothness to the cut. DM

I need to get one of these little Alpha's with the tan before they are all gone. That dark gun metal color will look good with the turquoise scales from MuskRatMan.

72:eek: I guess I dont have to worry about it wearing off. I hope youre right DM, anyway I intend to give it a workout rather than queening it.

Better get one jb for sure. Like I've said, a little small for me, but its one hell of a knife.

Will do Jim.

Alright, finally took a couple quick pics in between the raindrops-sorry not great pics.

Congrats on landing one, Kevin! The AD is one of my favorite and most used Buck knives.

O, no--not at all. ;) Thanks Dave for the gift.Let us know what you think after using it for a while. DM

This is the official story I got from one of our engineers:
The process is a PVD (PHYSICAL VAPOR DEPOSITION) chamber that fuses a number of materials to the blades. I believe we use the Black Widow DLC (diamond like coating) on the Cabelas knives and the TIALN (Aluminum Titanium Nitride based coating) for the Bass Pro series. It is similar to the ION fusion blades.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Joe, indeed it does.
