In talking to a knife maker friend of mine, And showing him what i was working on. He said that my blade grind which ends with about a 1/4 inch before the finger guard ,which is just a little depression, needed to have a place for the stress to be relieved or it would create a weak spot.

I have seen some of you guys knives and they dont have this. It goes from sharpened blade to thick metal then finger guard. Whats up. I dont know which way is right of if both are acceptable. I cant post pics but if i need to explain more i can look for some pics online.

if you're going to use it as a pry-bar then it should bother
you some but other wise I wouldn't worry about it
it all depends
on what you'er going to do with it...just my 2 cents:)

indian george and gray maker have the styles i am refering to. Look at indians knife in his avatar it it ground to the finger guard with no relier. Now look at grays his has what looks to be a finger notch. but if you put your finger in there and push the knife into something you are porbably going to get cut with the back of the edge. I have seen the relief made a lot smaller. But it still is a relief. This knife maker told me that that was a nono but i have seen different. This guy has been making knives for 20+ years i think i need to listen to him buy your guys cummulative experience is large. What to do.

J I started making in 1974 but it does not make me
more right in the way I
make knives and it doesn't make me wrong ether.
I put that notch in some of my knives only because I like it and my
customer likes it and because it gives the edge a place to start,
and nothing is in the way, for sharpening it.
and yes, it's not a place to put your finger, I won't push my
ideals on anyone and no one else should ether IMHO, we should just give the reasons
why one maker does something different than another maker.
like I said it depends on what it's used for..we alter
the construction to handle what we to use it for
a crow-bar has no weak points ground in but you can't cut
anything with it either. a cole chisel cuts but you're not
going to shave with it. I make knives for my customer,,
he pays the bill,, he gets what he wants,, if I don't make it
the way he wants it he will find someone that will, there
is much more to it but it's my bottom line :)

IG and Dan, I'm sure, have never had a blade break because of their design. If they had, they would not continue to grind/pound knives as such. Some folks tend to over react to an idea, and I think that is the following you have seen and mentioned. These guys make really good, solid knives, and I trust their judgement. I've ground such designs, never had any problem, either.

I was by no means saying one design was better than the other. I was told something that didnt seem like other knife makers were doing and i was split. This guy makes great knives and you guys make great knives. You know when your new and you spend a few hours on something and then someone tells you its wrong and then shows you how to do it correctlly and then puts his designs into it. I hate that.

I will probably not go back to him until i have made several by hand. He has a great shop and has everything one could need to get started but didnt feel right using his stuff making my knife. Maybe you guys know what i mean. Please keep posting pics of knives as you complete them. I get so excited when i see guys say this is my 3 or 4 knife and it looks wonderful. I think one day i will be making knives like that. I hope
