i prefer this method, it feels natural and i can get my folder into action quickly. which makers/mods offer this?? most sites don't show the clip and you have to ask. which is quite a chore between work and home, not to mentin time zone diff's. i've looked at several and it gets confusing. especially when you're picky like me.

any help appreciated. thanks!:p

most spyderco knives are tip up.

IIRC, the orientation is mentioned in the specs @ spyderco.com

Ok:

ANY Axis Benchmade is tip up (all of their LINER-LOCKS are tip down however.)
ANY Emerson is tip up (though I know at least the CQC7 can also be switched to tip down if you so desire.)
Alot of the cheaper spydercos are tip up, like the Native, Delica, and Endura. WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON THE SPYDIES: if you see the little round sort of phillips-head thing at the rear end of a spydie's handle, it's both reversible (for right or left) and tip up.
Also the new Lil' Temperance is tip up.
I seem to recall the Cold Steel GUNSITE folders as being tip up (but don't hold me to that.)

Hope this helps!

All Cold Steel folders are tip up carry. I just checked the catalog. :)

Editted to add: How hard is it to drill holes in zytle, g-10, carbon fiber to change the clip postion? One can customize his knives to either tip up or tip down or...from right hand to left hand!

thanks for the help. i got to handle emerson and benchmade today. i like the benchmade, alot smoother and the lock-up felt better/solid.

Benchmade Axis Locks are difficult to beat for function and ease of use. Like many other people, I also own tip down knives. This can create confusion (at least for me) if you rotate knives fairly often, so I've moved more to Axis and neck knives for daily carry. Nothing against fine liner locks, but I must admit that the Axis action is close to sublime.

i've decided to go with the benchmade 721. i didn't like the idea of the axis lock at first, but i grew to like it after handling some knifes. it's defenitely easier on the thumb than the liner lock.

Hi Tom-

Tip-up vs. Tip-down is a pretty popular topic around here. If you do a search on either term, I'm sure you'll get a flood of feedback. Here is one discussion with nearly fifty responses that has taken place recently: Tip-up vs.Tip-down discussion

I've had both. My current everyday carry (EDC) is a Benchmade Mini-AFCK with the round hole. It is in the "tip-down" configuration, which I find inherently safer, albeit slightly slower to deployment. Welcome to BladeForums. Hope that helps you decide.

tom,

if I may say so, exquisite choice, i've handled dang near every benchmade ever made and the 721 is easily the most ergonomic axis i've ever laid hands on, however I have not had the chance to try an AXIS AFCK :(

Just the same, the 721 should make a great EDC.

(P.S. most ergonomic BM EVER? Probably a 910 Stryker. Though I really like the feel of the AFCK also)

i may have changed my mind. i might go with the 942. i'm going to handle both the next week or so. i'm fortunate that i live by "house of blades" in fort worth tx. they claim to have the largest selection. they have ALOT of knives, cases upon cases. last time i was in there i think they had every benchmade. free sharpening for life with any knife purchase too.;)

You cant go wrong with the axis lock. Like you, I was leary at first, but soon fell in love with the axis lock. Short of an auto, I have not found a faster or smoother one hander (open to close and vise-versa). I own an ares for my EDC. On a side note, I would be carefull letting any one sharpen one of my blades for "free".... call me a bigot, but "If you cant sharpen it you shouldnt own it..."

Hey tom poe :

Benchmade's are EXCELLENT "tip up" carry knives ; Spyderco is also
an EXCELLENT choice. Try the Benchmade "Griptillian" Model 550 or
Spyderco Centofante C66 "Vesuvius" with it's "compression lock"; thing
about the "compression lock" and "tip up" is that the blade can partially open under heavy activity. I sent mine back to S.F.O. to have it adjusted to my favorite carry, "tip down". To each his/her own. Maybe I'll "step out of the picture" someday and get a Benchmade
Model 555 "mini Griptillian". So many Spydies, so little money!
