Hi. I've made a few folding knives, one lock back and one slip joint with square tang. I've read a couple of books on folding knives but the emphasis is on locking blades. On a slip joint, is there a proper set up? For example: let's say the width at the front of the bolster is 1" . How wide should the spring be? .20", something else? NOW let's say the spring is .20", that leaves .80" for the tang. Should the hole be half way from top to bottom? That would be .40". On most folding knives as you close the blade the spring rises above the back of the knife for about 1/2 of its width. If the spring is .20" then it would rise .10". That means the diagonal from the blade rivet to the top back corner and along the back of the tang to the bottom back corner would be .40" plus the .10" or .50".
Next- the distance from the blade rivet to the front of the bolster- should it be the same as the back (.50") so the tang is even with the front of the bolster?
And, the rise on the notch: should it be slightly back from the front of the bolster- so as to have the bolsters enclosing the blade up to the spine?
I can't find much information on this and I've done "best guess" but would like to know if there are standard ways to set up the design. Thanks for any help.
