Okay, I know a bunch of you guys with digicams are going to Blade Show in Atlanta, but a bunch of us ain’t. :(
I’m sure the folks that ain’t going would appreciate all the good photos from the show we can get, so we can feel like we were there with you. Last year I had a great time and there were some great pics after the show posted here, but I thought if the guys taking pics had an Assignment, we could get a composite of show shots that no magazine could ever match.

Here’s what I’d like to see:
KNIVES: Really tight shots of the Special knives from the show. Not pics from 3 feet away, but where the subject knife fills the frame. Taking shots of the knives we’re all familiar with are okay, but the knives that win awards or are really special would be the goal.

The MAKERS: Everybody gets those “Maker behind the table shots” and those are okay, but what would be special are the Candid Shots of the makers interacting with the crowd, out on the Loading Dock or in the Pit at the Waverly when they let their hair down. Extra Credit if you catch them with their pants down.

The BFC Members: This is a Community, if I can’t be having fun with you folks the next best thing would be to see the folks that I know from here having fun at the show. Being able to put a face with a name from here would be very cool. The best would be if you buy a knife at the show to get your pic taken with the maker.

The CHAT Crew: Most of my favorite people from BFC are regulars at Chat, and I’m going to miss you that weekend. Take some pics, let me see what a great time you had so I can have even more of a reason for kicking myself in the a$$ for not being there. :(

Those I think are the Major categories, each could have many sub-categories. For example, different photographers could have different preferences for the styles of knives, (Tactical, traditional, art, etc.) But if each of you made a point to get great shots of the Best of the Best we could end up with some really outstanding pics.

Okay, so Who is going with a Camera?
Who thinks they would like to take on an Assignment?
Who thinks they would be particularly good at one of these Categories?

What do you think?
;)

Phil,

I'm almost certain I'll make it at least for the first, maybe second day. I'll bring my digicam and try to take as many pics as possible, although I'm not sure how many pics I can store at the highest resolution. I'll pick up another memory stick before then, so it should be at least a few dozen.

As far as displaying them on the forum here, I'm limited to very small files that I can attach to my posts so maybe you can get them on your link.

Jose, that's great. Which cattegory do you think you could focus your efforts on? I'm mean are you good at; closeups (knife shots), people shots, (candits of makers or BFC members), or After Hours shots?

My reason for suggesting Assignments is to get the best photographer for each job focusing at least some of their shots for a specific goal. If there's enough interest in this I'll be glad to act as Editor, (select, crop, color correct and layout) for a Blade Show 2002 Album, (giving the photographers credits) and post it to my album site. I'm not trying to suggest that you only take shots of your assignment, just something to keep in the back of your mind while you're enjoying the show.

Great idea Phil!!!
I'll be takin my sony mavica and a box full of floppy discs and I plan on fillin em all up with great pix.
I do have a question about taking pix of the makers and other folks there. Should I ask their permission first or just shoot away?
Also, since I can't drag a light box around the place, is there any kind of light I could use to help the knives show up better?

Mike, to take candits never ask, if you do all you'll get is those Cheese Eatin' Grins, and those frozen poses of your typical snapshots. Set your camera on it's longest focal length, (ie telephoto setting) and take your first shots before they know you're photographing them. Then as you get closer and they notice you ask if they mind and watch the phoney smiles get plastered to their faces. :D I used to teach Photography and my first rule for photographing people was, "When you think you've got the person just where you want them, before you snap the shutter...Take Three Giant Steps Forward>

The lighting at shows is pretty bad, still there are some guys that can get very good knife shots with the available lights. I don't want to ruin anyone's fun by suggesting they carry and additional equipment around with them while they're at the show. Your on camera flash is fine for people shots and deadly for closeup knife photography.

Mikey, I think you'd be great for in the In Show Makers and Members shots, as well as the after hours shots. Save a floppy for them.

Phil,

I'll concentrate on high res knife shots and lower the resolution on my camera for any other shots that come up. I like the idea of you acting as editor and working your magic on fixing up the pics.

I'll second Dex

I carried my Digicam all show last year. Didn't take two pics.

I'll try to do better this year.

Geeeeezzzz
i hope some of you guys will concentrate on my favorite motive:

Girls with knives ;)

Phil,
With my Mavica and Pentax SLR plus everyone elses cameras,I think we can hook you up.

Dont forget, though. Our offer still stands.

I'll be taking my digicam and a 35mm. I will be taking 1 min MPEGS of the sword demonsrations and the like. I can hold 240 pics and 10 min worth of video.

I upgraded my PictureTrail account so that I could add an album just for Blade Show pics. That's in case there's anyone that can't get their show pics up by themselves. If you want to E-mail them me at;
plabarbera@nyc.rr.com
I'll color correct, crop, sharpen, adjust the file size and load on my album site.

I'm good to go.

Right on Tim. Is everybody waiting until the show is over to post pictures? Come on folks, let's get with it. ;)

*Edited to add:

I want all the people that are going to the effort of getting these pictures for the rest of us to see to know that I appreciate what you are doing very much. Thanks.

Well Ken posted some pictures, but what the heck has happened to rest of you guys? I thought there would be lots of pictures up by now.
