I'm shooting less than 50% today on the forum -- get the server too busy message or website not responding. Too much traffic? What's the solution?

It's a problem of too much traffic for his current server to handle. He needs to upgrade to a more powerful server, but that cost $$$.
Kevin could charge for the usage of the Forums and that would decrease traffic and increase income. I looks like he is trying walk on the fine line of doing what is good for the community and what is good for him. He should be commended. Maybe a special fund for new server(s)? I'd be willing to pay a community "one-shot" fee for server upgrade. Maybe auctions by dealers, makers and forumites? I don't know... ANy ideas?

I'd recommend upgrading your membership if you haven't done so yet. It costs about the same as a magazine subscription, and I get more out of the forum than I do from any magazine.

I'd also look at the current server virus that is making it's rounds as another contributor...

Kevin posted somewhere else that it's not a bandwidth issue. It's a CPU issue. With 17,000 plus users it's no suprise. Imagine a hundred users doing a search through thousands of posts...very, very cpu intensive.
I would rather pay a "one off" fee than a subscription. Just my preference.

Seems that last time BF went down for service I noticed 'ol Spark was running a 'Windows box' (...a notorious resource hog). If thats true, then it's amazing this place doesn't bogg down or crash alot more than it does. He needs to get it on a recompiled Linux kernel running Apache, MySQL and PHP!

BTC,

I think he is running Linux these days.
I have to maintain 40+ Windoze servers everyday at work.:( I'm not allowed to bring my 18"WWII into work to keep them inline, either!

But they sure are nice to play with! Give as gifts to start a fever, or just to admire, think about the history behind them, or modify if you are so inclined. :)
