Hi All,

I was just wondering if us Knifeknuts ever arrange for 'git togethers to meet other members and for a little "show and tell" of our knives?? In all the years I have been on BF (on and off) I have only seen one report of a "knife luncheon"...I have attended a few such (Timezoner) events for watch enthusiasts (heck, I even organized a couple) and they were a lot of fun...any interest here?

RL

PS Ok, so it may not be that easy to show up to a restaurant with 100 knives but...

The first step would be for you to add your city and state to your profile so that forum members in your area might contact you and you might arrange something.

Ok, that's fair..I have done so...but I'm still wondering if such events do take place...

Some of the Timezone luncheons have featured prominent guests from the watch companies...I think the opportunities for having "guests" is even higher in the knife community since so many custom makers frequent the forums...sure I have read about 2-3 people getting together for some beers (that Mayo guy seems to like beer :) ) but I'm talking about something involving (hopefully) 20-30 people.

Atlanta Blade in June will most likely have one at Ruby's with a night time gathering at one of the finer eat'in joints in Atlanta.

The California group seems to meet from time to time along with some folks on the East Coast around in the Carolina's somewhere.

Actually, many restaurants have private rooms available. Sometimes, they rent them out for a fixed fee. Others will lend you the room for free if you can get a certain number of people to show up. Still others will simply ask for a minimum tab. Some will just say, "Go ahead, use the room. We'd like the publicity."

You may think you won't find enough knife enthusiasts to fill a banquet room and that's probably true. But, many restaurants have smaller private rooms ideally suited for ten to twenty people.

Just ask around at some of your favorite places.

ALL the different 'cliques' from BFC get together...the North Carolina boys, the bastids, the usual suspects, etc etc...

if you ever have the chance to attend, jump on it.

and,by the way,it seems like there are several forum members from your area here on the forums. try posting in community to see who all you can find.

Yes, such things are done. We have had a couple of great get togethers of DC area knife knuts in the past few years. Unfortunately, last year we had only a few people show up for a BBQ at a park on a rainy day. I know the North Carolina bunch gets together on a regular basis.

I have wrestled with this private room, how big is your party, problem before. It is hard to justify the expense of reserving a private room for 20 if you are only sure that 5 people will show up. It would be best for someone to host a small group at their home, but that is not always possible.

Abut 12 of us had lunch at a local restaurant two years ago. I could not reserve a private room on short notice, but they agreeed to seat us in a relatively quite corner. We were Very visible. Because I had informed the management before, and we were reasonably discreet, we were able to share a lot of knives. I made the mistake of opening a SIFU while holding it above the table, but the size of that thing surprised me more than the people seated around us. I didn't bring very many knives because I was worried about legal issues. But most states allow the carry of knives to shows or meetings without violating knife carry restrictions, just like the 'hunting-fishing' exception granted by many states.

So, I think if you dress well, carry your knives in bags or cases, don't get drunk and act stupid, you can probably show anything you want at a restaurant in public. Just get seated at the back. And inform the management ahead of time, and be nice to your waiter. If someone calls the cops, be nice, explain that you are a group of knife collectors, and that none of you are carrying any weapons. Just tools and collectibles.

This reminds me, I need to organize another luncheon for VA/MD/DC folks sometime soon. :)

GREAT!

I'm glad to hear that these things happen...I wish people would post online reviews with pics.

Search the community forum for past threads about get togethers, people post about such events fairly often. Why don't you organize something for your area, post about it in the community forum, and see who wants to get together.

If you decide to do something in the Toronto area I am interested. The restaurant near my shop probably would not mind a group of knife nuts on a Saturday morning.

bigbore...thanks for the pics...that's the type of thing that I like to see!

George...great! perhaps I will make a concerted effort then....maybe we can build in a tour of your shop??? (I hope I wasn't imposing by asking...)

I'm in! (and Carol Tichbourne still owes me a donut)

Hey, Para, I think that it's time to try again! Should I try to set something up in Northern Virginia or would some Marylander like to try somewhere between the two cities?

At the last couple of NWKC knife-shows in Tacoma, WA, a few of us have gotten together and had a nice lunch, and a show-n-tell session. That's where I've met the likes of UW Mitch, Javahead, Tom Marshman, and Chuck Bybee (sorry about the spelling if it's wrong, Chuck...), among others...ALL are very nice people "in real-life", and I'd be proud to call anyone of them "a friend".:).

We have a gathering of the BAY AREA KNIFE KNUTTS a couple times of year.Come to think of it we are due again.:)
