Bladesless Multitool?

Hello all,

I'm curious if anyone knows of a multi-tool that does not have BLADES.

I have two (Buck and Gerber)and I find myself wishing they would have added or improved the 'tools' and left the blades out.

I always carry a primary blade and rarely if ever use the blades on my multi-tools. The quality isn't there and it is much easier to grab my Spyderco Native to cut with rather than pull out the multi-tool to cut something. Even if I felt a need for a smaller blade I would rather carry a quality small slip joint and a larger primary blade than use the multi-tool blades.

I think that by offering a multi-tool with NO blades manufacturers could use the new found space for either adding or improving the screwdrivers or what ever. I do think the addition or improvement of the excellent SAK style saw or a small REPLACEABLE diamond hone would be a better tool to have than a blade actually. There's an idea-a DMT needle style hone for serated edges, and a DMT flat hone for PE blades! Also, torx drivers in the sizes common to the knives being made today would help also.

Perhaps someone could produce a 'knife knut' version multi-tool? Without blades and with accessories a 'knife-knut' could really use.

Just a thought...

I'm kind of tempted to agree with you. I just finished sharpening a coworkers multi tool (he's a bit of an idiot anyway) and I couldn't believe the ammount of damage done to this BS blade. I sharpen by hand and I couldn't believe how long it took me to just clean up the edge.

I have thought about this for awhile now. I originally considered it because I wanted to get my son a multitool but he isn't old enough to have a knife yet. One solution is SOG. The tools can be removed. The knife blade could be removed and replaced with something else.

During some correspondance with Leatherman a few months
ago in one of the replies they shared that Leatherman was working
on a bladeless version for Schools ,courthouses, etc. where a blade
is instant trouble. Then came Sept 11, 2001.......

My guess is with the current parnoia about knives & tools they given
up on that idea.

I agree with "shootist16" that SOG is the first place to look. Not only do they make their tools easy to take apart, but they will sell you individual replacement "blades" of any sort they make to put in there. It's nice to be able to customize!

On my sog paratool you can remove the blade and put a washer in its place or a different accessory if you want. It is very easy to remove the blade all you need is a hex wrench. I have done this for exactly the reason you have stated above. As a matter of fact i would prefer to have a useful accessory instead of a blade on my multitool because i have never used it, when i need a blade i use my cqc7 or commander.

Glad to see I'm not alone...

Thanks for the heads up on SOG. I know they make a quality tool. I did not know that you could purchase replacement tools for them.

Agree that multi tool blades tend to be crap. I gave up on even sharpening mine-I just use them as scrapers and pry bars!

I'll check them out.

I'd be keen on a bladeless multi-tool, too. I prefer the Leatherman Wave but would love to see some mods. I mean, FOUR flat screwdrivers?!? I would gladly give up one or two of them, and the clip pt blade for a good, Vnox SAK quality awl, a marlin spike, a flint match (or holder for one), and a bigger/better lanyard attachment.

I do like the Leatherman's diamond file on the Wave, PST II, and Pulse. Very useful for touching up blade edges; the file spine (non-teeth side) can be used as an occasional steel, too.

Great idea.
I do carry a blade with pocket clip just for cutting and a leatherman wave. I could do without one blade on the leatherman. Its would still be nice to have one left on there for them times I use a knife for things other then cutting. Like using the knife tip to clean out crap in a screw head, etc...
Kind of nice not having to use a good, sharp knife for them type of jobs.

DMT inplace of the blade on a multitool, there is a great idea :)

On the other end of the multi-tool spectrum there are several excellent miniature plier tools that do not include a blade.

There is also a bladeless SAK, the only problem is that it has scissors which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me...Why would you go so far as to remove the blade but still add scissors?
