I will soon have the components of my forge complete. Any suggestions on good books or videos to help me get started? I have completed several finised blades and made several knives from bandsaw blades. I'm more concerned with the actual forging and heat treatment than with knife constructon.

Paul, your best bet would be to find a smithy close enough to visit. Most knife folks are very kind and generous and enjoy having someone over who is wanting to learn the craft. If you get one of the annual knives books, look in the back, they have state by state listings of knife makers with their contact info.

Take care!! Michael

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Check out some of the local Amish smiths. You have several communities close to you. Luthersburg and Smicksburg. They are generally easy to talk to. Good luck. bruce

There are several videoes to check out. The first I would recommend would be "Primitive Knifemaking" you can find it on www.livelyknives.com. The price is extremely reasonable considering the ABS videoes are around $50 each. After that, go with the ABS videoes. The only thing they really show that Tim Lively's doesn't is how to use a power-hammer, and do a silver-wire inlay. But chances are, if you're just getting into it, you don't have a power-hammer and silver wire is easy enough to inlay with a small ball peen hammer and an exacto anyway.

Thanks for the replies. I will have to check out the local Amish community and Tim Lively"s video is already on the list.
