BM 520 or Chinook II?

I'll be getting both eventually, but which to get first?

I love the AXIS-lock, along with Mel Pardue designs. On the other hand, the Chinook II has premium steel, G-10, revised lockback and the usual Spyderco quality.

And no, I don't want a Sebenza at the moment. :p

They're both awesome, so I'd go with whether or not you want a one-hand closer or two-hand closer as your first of that collection. With the choil, you may be able to close the Chinook II with one hand, but its upswept point makes the idea of using your leg to assist closing a little dangerous.

Tough choice. Both companies and designers really went to town on those folders.

Maybe you get the Extrema Ratio Fulcrum II D instead. It's not overbuilt like the BM520 Presidio or Spyderco Chinook II; it's uber-tank built, which is a different category.

Check out this review of the new Chinook:

The knife is given to a contractor for some serious and practical hard use. The use of the tip of the blade to pry two sections of steel frame into alignment, and the minimal damage to the blade and blade-edge, is impressive.

This folder appears to be an excellent evolutionary product, in both materials and finish details.

The knife in that review is the Chinook 1. The knife in question is actually the newly revised Chinook 2.

Oops! You're right. I got my reviews mixed up.

The Chinook II replaces 440V blade with S30V, lock re-designed for greater strength, lighter weight, narrower handle and some nice finishing touches. It does seem to be a nice evolutionary design.

There is another review with close-up photos of some of the Chinook II refinements, but I can't seem to find it again.

It's at the head of the line for my next folder purchase.

hands down, the chinook 2. that knife is really hard to beat in terms of its materials & design -- especially at that low price. i really want spyderco to produce a chinook-handled knife with the BM 520's blade shape... now that would would be close to perfect!

Do you think, you cab pry with that type as much as with the actual chinook?

BTW the review looks impressing, but the author should have mentioned how stong was pried. Did he moved loose maerial, so just materials weight or were they fixed so they would smack back if not screwed.

How thick is the blade at that point? Just things to know, to get the right impression.
