I just got my BM 42 AS and like it a lot. But I have noticed that when held in my right hand the back of the blade rubs lightly against the safe handle when opening and closing horizontally. Is this something unusual that I should try to fix? If so, how? When held in my left hand the swing of the blade is silent.

Take a closer look & see if all the washers are there. There should be a washer on each side of the blade in the handle. If it's only doing it while in your right hand it, it sounds like to me, that the washer on the right side may be missing. Another possibility, is the inside portion of the handle may not have gotten cleaned up very well, when it was assembled. When Eric "Mer", helped me with my bead blasted 42, we noticed that the edge of handle had some burrs, so he cleaned it out & lubricated it some. Now it it's as smooth as silk and quieter than a mouse. So, if you're not worried about voiding your warranty; pop the pins & see it the washer is missing, clean the surface a little and lube it up. Hope this helps!:)

Thanks, Mike.
After reading your note, I checked for burrs, but did not see or feel any. I also checked the washers and found them all there. I noticed though that there seems to be more sideways play in the safety handle, so I think my next attempted cure will be to tighten the screw a little on that side. Now to find a wrench that fits...
