Hey there guys, i'm new to the forum and a recreational thrower. I've just seen the video on Mr. Brantons site CombatKnifeThrowing.com. In a couple or all of the vid clips it look like you (he ) is using some kind of sloted blade thrower. Question: is that a custom knife, or can it be purchased? Thanks for the time guys.

Hi,

The videos are of me (Ralph Thorn). I get asked a lot about those knives. There's nothing special about them. They are just a cheap, mass-manufactured batch of knives that I thought would work well for the video because I liked the way they looked, shiny and kind of different, with those holes in them. Bobby himself makes far superior knives. Those knives in the video are Smith and Wessons, and they are now discontinued. They are hard to find, but again, I don't recommend that you bother. Nothing against those knives, but they're just not anything special or worth seeking out, and in fact they break easily.

Thanks for your interest,

Ralph Thorn

Sorry Ralph, Thanks for the info i think i'll be checking out Brantons blades, thanks again for the heads up.

Hey,Ralph.....super cool to see that you are on here. I have been throwing knives for my whole life (not to mention breaking all kinds of knives while throwing). In my younger years when I practiced with knives I could stick a 1 1/2 foot bayonet in a human sized target's head most of the time from up to 40 feet away. More recently I have been mostly throwing axes. I am going to start practicing knives again. Recently my fiend asked me if you could throw a knife without any spin and I told him, only from a close distance....but right after that I found your site. how far out can you do a no spin throw with an average length knife? I am planning on purchasing your dvd to learn the technique. Thanks

It would be nice to be able to throw a knife from greater distances without having to be standing in the exact same spot.

An average size knife is about 12 inches, I guess. There is a clip of me throwing one of those about 25 feet with good power on my dvd, and I think it is also on the website.

I can throw backhand, but I don't like that throw.

Thanks for your interest. Hope you pick up the dvd. You'll see me throwing a bayonet on there, too...

Ralph, in the clip where you demonstrate accuracy, aren't you throwing broken knives (the slotted ones)? They look like they are broken in half (i.e. you're throwing just the blade).

By the way, thanks for your book/video. Huge inspiration.

You're the first person to mention that to me. Yes, the last clip in the accuracy section is me throwing six broken remnants of those larger throwing knives. I did that for two reasons: one, those little broken blades don't take up much space so I could group them in a smaller area; and two, just to show that I don't need special equipment. Obviously if you can throw out-of-balance junk like that, you can throw a lot of things.

I'm very glad you enjoy my stuff.

By the way, I've been offline for a week or so thanks to computer problems, so I am sorry if I have missed any messages directed at me in the forums. I am just now getting back online on a regular basis.

yeah Ralph, I have a set of those black slotted blades too, and mine also broke right at the end of the slot.

I bought your vid in January 07 - thanks, I've learned a lot (I watch closely).

Bobby, I just bought 3 of your #8 (the cheap ones) throwers; they are really nice, thank you.
