Bolsters on EDC folders?
I have always thought that putting bolsters on edc folders, especially larger folders, was just added weight and really served no purpose other than cosmetic. Please let me know how you feel about this!

You're probably right about bolsters being cosmetic (with modern handle materials) as opposed to functional, but I voted for bolsters anyway, because I think they really enhance the look of a gents folder and that's what I mostly carry.

I have bolsters on all my custom folders, and I would not know what to do if they were not there:confused: Just kidding, I love the look with bolsters, especially in ti over something like carbon fiber.

I like the looks of bolsters, they add something to the appearance of a knife. I don't mind the increase in weight that much, I think it is really to small to make a difference. That said, most of my knives don't have bolsters.

I like the looks. I have three knives with bolsters, and they are my favorite carries. An A.G. Russell Walker lock with Ti bolsters, and quince burl scales, A.G. Russell 340 lockback with Nickel/silver bolsters, damascus blade, and burl scales, MicroTech LCC with Ti bolsters, and carbon fiber scales. If I had to give up all my knives, these would be the last ones to go.

I agree that bolsters enhance the look of many folders, but I don't happen to own any folders that have them... These days my EDC folders tend to be of the all-metal-frame variety one way or another on which bolsters seem unnecessarily redundant.

Can i please vote for option # 3:
"Bolsters are just dead weight on edc folders, but i like them and wouldn't wanna live without em!"

;)

I too, mostly carry all metal handled folders everyday.
However, I like bolsters and they do have their place. On knives with thin liners and handle materials such as wood, stag, and shell, I think, properly done, bolsters do exactly what they are named for; bolster the strength of the pivot area. Modern materials such as G-10, carbon fiber, and other synthetics may not benefit as much from bolsters. Then it's a matter of aesthetics and I perfer bolsters on quite a few such handled knives.
Regards,
Greg

I absolutely love the handmade bolsters on my Mike "Whiskers" Allen custom folder - yes I carry this every day.

Thanks for the poll and chance to vote!

I only like bolsters on a traditional slip-joint pattern (canoe, trapper, congress, stockman, ect...).
But for an EDC one-hander-pocketclip-locking folder I think they're just extra weight.

Good luck,
Allen.

Sorry, mate. A folding knife without bolsters is just
a bit to naked for my taste unless the knife is all
metal.

Deadweight, but so what.

They look great - they have some function on knives with organic handle materials and if you like a forward-balanced tool, they make that kind of automatic.

With few exceptions, I always choose to carry a bolstered folding knife.
