Bolsters on the Khukuris: are they solid or hollow in construction?

Hello everyone, I was wondering if the bolsters on the Khukuris are hollow or solid? Does any portion of the handle fit into the bolster? Thanks in advance.

Broken Arrow,

Bolsters/caps are hollow. The wooden/horn handles are sandwiched between the bolsters/caps on both ends. The small elongated triangular piece on the end goes on last and then you peen the end of the blade - this locks it all together. There is some funky black tree sap that is poured into the caps/bolsters, and tang to help take up the voids. This appears to be the 'norm' for the khukuris.

The Panawal is made the same way, except it has two halves that uses two aluminum rivets to help secure the scales. It uses the same small triangle piece, and the end of the tang is peened over as well.

A good way to remove a horn handle is hold it in boiling water and periodically tug on the handle (you have to grind/file the peen off and pop the end off). BTW - DON'T use a good pan....the tree sap sticks like crazy to stuff....weird smell: phhhhhhhhhhewwwwwy! LOL.

Broken Arrow,

Maddog has done a few handle modifications on Khukuris. I just happen to be sitting here with one of his creations now (a Cherry handled SN-1). Fortunately, he's been kind enough to take some pictures and let me post them on the Forum Gallery.

The last pics I got were of the disassembly of a Panawal handle. The two pics below show a pretty good view of the bolster and the shape of the handle slabs.

I made a few minor mods to Ray's handle so it works better for me...I also refinished it with boiled linseed oil. Not as shiny, but a little easier to grip.

The WW style khukuri is hard to beat, IMHO for all around utility.
Hope to have a picture of the modified handle to send after the holidaze.

You guys take care. I hope old St.Nick will be good to you!

Well, a official supplier to Santa Claus, I can tell you that he was VERY good to some of you (thanks to the elves that, during the rest of the year, go by the name "wife".

As for the bolsters, Mad Dog is %105 correct as usual. I actually have a brass bolster sitting around somewhere that I will be happy to post when I get back to the US.

Finland is really cold, and it is light only 5 hours a day (and overcast at that). I just got back from my uncles house - he's now the proud owner of a Bhojpure. He does not speak very good english, and my Finnish is spotty (my wife's is perfect), so I took him outside and asked him "Missä on puuta?" (Where is your wood). When he saw that I was about to start chopping, he said loudly "Ei" (which means No). Of course, once I made a few chops, he got a big grin on his face, grabbed the bhojpure from my hands, and proceded to show me how happy he was with his new toy by chopping clear through the piece of pine. Not a particularly "grizly" story, but a fun Christmas one. The moral: khukuris transcend the boundaries of language!!!!!!
