I've got a small forge set up, a nice Peter Wright anvil, a hand crank blower, and a cast iron sink and I've done a few small blacksmithing jobs, wall hooks, plant hangers and the like. Now I would like to try making some small hunting knives similar to Kellams Puukko style or Mike Snody armadilo skinners in 1095 steel. Now i would like someone to tell me what is the best book to get to help me on my way. Something straight forward. I'm not making swords or anything really big, just some nice small fixed blade hunting knives or skinners.

Barnes and Loveless is very good. Ed Fowler's book "Knife Talk" has a fair bit in it about forging technique, it is a compilation of his articles from Blade Magazine.

Good luck

Chris

I've gotten the Loveless/Barney book as well as "The Complete Bladesmith" by Jim Hrisoulas. Both books are excellent but the Hrisoulas book has far more information about forging knives and is written for beginners, great books. Amazon.com has both of them. I'd also recommend the 50$ knife shop by Wayne Goddard, it has great information about getting into knife making. Good luck, you can see pic's of my start in stock removal on http://www.derekmelton.com/knife.cfm

The $50 Knife shop by Wayne Goddard comes to mind should help you along your way. Get it directly from Wayne and he will autograph it for you.. Also The Master Bladesmith by Jim Hrisoulas..is ment for the beginner. with lots of info that won't leave you with your head swimming..

I'll second the video recommendation. I just got it and it's great. He really gives you a lot of information and is a very good teacher. Takes a fancy dagger from start to finish. It was quite long (about three hours or so) and was quite reasonably priced from Texas Knife Supply or Koval.

Yep. I agree. Both The Wonder of Knifemaking and The $50 Knife Shop by Wayne are excellent. I like the $50 Knife Shop one just little better though. It has more of the do it on a shoe string type of thinking in it.

Thanks for all the info, I ordered the book How to make knives from Loveless and Barney for now and I'm going to look into some of the other ones that were suggested. Thanks again for all of the info.
