Well if this proposed new law passes placing one hand opening and closing knives like those I build in the same class as a switch blade making it a crime to even mail them I can either consider renaming my forum Bootleg Knives and coming up with a new logo for a bootlegger like in prohibition or just give up and become one of many other makers that shut down from the changes in the law for what is legal and what is not. I understand that in some areas even making switch blades is illegal. I believe that is the case in Oklahoma although we are allowed to own them, we just can't carry them so it could be read to mean I am committing a crime just to make a one hand opening locking folder in the future if this administration has its way.

I tell ya I knew this was going to get bad before it got worse but I guess I didn't expect to see it come up on is so fast. Guess time will tell.

Where can I find the nearest speak easy?

You could tighten down the pivots when you ship your knives to make it to where you have to use two hands to open the knife and then once the person receives their knives they could just loosen the pivot.

Great idea! Or bolt a "spacer" in front of the frame, or liner lock, where the "spacer" is the lock, until the end-user un-bolts the "spacer" for personal use.

These would be a FIXED blade, unless the authorities actually took the time to disassemble the knife.

PS - I thought "fixed blades" were more apt to be outlawed than folders?

They'll do that once everyone starts carrying fixed after folders are made illegal. Right now fixed are not a problem since folders are the things people most often have on them. Its already to the point in some cities that you commit a crime unknowingly just walking out the front door of you home because they are making honest law abiding citizens criminals each time the restrictions get tighter. The big squeeze is on for sure with the liberals in power and its just starting.
Thats my guess anyways.

I just got an email from Benchmade about this exact thing. I wanted to post it here, so we can all do our part and fight the powers that be!

(QUOTE):

U.S. Customs Wants To Ban Your Pocket Knife

Dear Gritter,

Benchmade Knife Company, in support with The American Knife and Tool Institute (AKTI) opposes U.S. Customs' attempt to classify assisted-opening knives and all one-hand-opening knives as switchblades.

U.S. Customs proposes to bypass Congress and expand the switchblade definition to include all knives that open with one hand. These include multi-tools, traditional pocket knives, one-hand openers, and assisted-openers.

More than 35 million law-abiding Americans now own one-hand-opening knives in one of the above four categories.

The majority of Americans who carry and use one-hand-openers every day need them for their jobs. They use them to save lives as well as for scores of recreational activities.

If U.S. Customs succeeds, it could lead to effectively banning all folding knives from interstate commerce.

We're asking you to register your opposition to the U.S. Customs' plan (19 CFR Part 177) to re-classify assisted openers and all folding knives.

Please address your comments to arrive at Customs by June 21, 2009.

We'll look back on this time we currently live in on the end times for the 'age of denial' as folks begin to wake up more and more now. I'm sure by 2012 we'll look back to this time and before with disgust for not rising up sooner while we wonder how it could have come to this. Trends Journal refers to the current times as "Obamageddon" others will say it was all started with Reagan, while others will insist it goes back further to Franklin D. but the truth is they all contributed to where we find ourselves now as the powers that be pick away little by little with each new president and each new term.

I expect that my state will soon be amending the law books to add pocket knives to my conceal carry license for my firearm so that it includes the option to carry one of those if I desire much like it already insists on listing the type of handgun you can carry by designations of the letter, S, for semi auto, R, for revolver or D for derringer making it illegal is you are designated to legally carry a D but are caught with a R on your person.

They do this with a letter M for 'motorcycle' privileges and if you are caught on a bike without an "M" on your license you can be arrested and lose the bike. Big brother has gotten pretty big in my lifetime. .

2012, huh? The Mayans believed the world would end on December 12, 2012.

From just a few sales on eBay, I've noticed there is a frantic buying rush on folding knives right now. I've gotten emails begging me to ship it fast, because of worry about these new laws.

IF our passion becomes illegal, I think some of the classics will seriously raise in value, if the manufactures are forced to cease production.

Either stock up, in hopes they will all be worth double in a few months, or sell 'em all now, while this scare tactic is in full force, feeding the buying frenzy.

Yeah I know the story. Its Dec. 21st by the way. ;)

By the end of this year leading into 2010 and by the time we are just about to 2011 enough is going to take place in the way of government and earth changes to make this one little customs change seem small by comparison. Thats my guess anyways. I think at the very least the next two-three years are going to be very hard on everyone.
