This is the signup list for the Bow Legged Chopper.

I'm not going to call this one a run, but just an open ended signup list. Please keep in mind that I don't take money up front, but please don't sign up if you're not serious about taking the knife.

I'm not offering wood on this model. This knife takes a monster scale. Way bigger than a standard knife scale. I have to start with a 6" x 3" piece, more than twice the area of a standard knife scale. It would be a LOT harder to get perfectly flat for a face joint. Its too small to go into a planer either. Micarta is a better choice for this model because it is a lot more bombproof, which is in line with the intended usage of this knife, and comes nice and flat, so I can do my layered handles.

As to the micarta and/or G-10, the base price includes standard stuff. I'm pretty wide open on combo's. I use a 1/8" inner layer, and have a good amount of stock including orange g-10, and bright yellow g-10, and also black canvas and nat canvas micarta. The outter layer starts out at 1/4" thick. I currently have nat canvas, black canvas, blue g-10, red linen, green linen, and a bit of ivory paper. Again, for standard phenolics, I don't mind ordering something if you have something in mind. If you go to Midwest Knifemaker Supply you can see pics of the different stuff out there. Just let me know what you want and I will order it. Please don't go sending me a piece of material to use.

I'm also going to offer a few choices from Shade Tree Phenolics at an upsale price. I'm going to at least get some burlap, which I think is gorgeous. Its also 5X the price of nat canvas micarta. A $20 upsale for the burlap will be added to the price of the knife. He also has things that are even more awesome, and the price goes up.

As always, Mosaic pins add $5 to the price of the knife.

For now the knife is offered in 5160 steel 1/4" thick with a full height convex grind. The knife is 15.75" long and has a 6" handle. Forge scale will be left in tact, and polishing this beast is not an upsale I will offer. I will be having these waterjetted at Great Lakes Waterjet. I use two SS Corby Bolts on the handle, and a Bullseye lanyard tube is standard on this one. So the base price for this model gets you a badass knife with standard phenolic scales, two corby bolts, and a bullseye tube. The base price is $350 for this knife.

I am going to work on sheath options, but as usual, I will have JRE design something and sell that at very close to my cost. (Rounded up to next $5.) I also expect, and am very excited to see what Talfuchre comes up with for this bad boy. And Dylside is working on kydex too. (IMO, big knives are a PITA to carry on your belt. A baldric rig is better suited, or just attaching it to your pack.)

This thread is the signup for the Bow Legged Chopper. Please detail your handle choices in your post, and monitor this post for your order details.

I'll take #1. Per our PMs, we will work out Shade Tree scale choice later.

Son-of-a... You bastid...

:eek:After all of the trolling I do of this forum, how did you beat me to #1?!:grumpy:;)

Oh well, put me down at #2. I'm going to have to think about the handle choice though. There are still a lot of interesting combinations despite eliminating your wood selections. I agree that composites are the only way to go for a knife of this size and intended purpose.

ETA: I'm thinking maybe the yellow or orange G-10 base with Black Canvas Micarta, but again, I'm still having trouble deciding.

Haha. And I held out putting the names on the list that have requested a spot so you could get #1 too...

Yep. Finally... The prototype is not yet cold....

For a sheath, I'd be happy with a heavy canvas with possibly a reinforced tip to keep the blade from continuing on through the bottom of the sheath. I plan to carry mine under the rear seat in my truck, so something with a flap that folded up and over the handle and didn't rattle when rubbing against metal or hard plastic items would really be nice.

I get a lot of my leather sheaths from JRE. I don't know what Andy and the boys at JRE are cooking up, but a can guarantee it will be impressive. What is nice about JRE is that they will make mods to a standard sheath to fit your needs. They've added fire steel loops, rigged a sheath for underarm carry, and added/deleted carry options for me.

Here is a link to my BF photos. All the leather is from JRE, including the strop.

The knife is off at the kydex maker's house right now. But this link will take you to some pics of available product:

Andy,
I am looking forward to working with you on this, looks like a very cool project.

I'll be sending you a message in a moment.

Thanks,

FOD,

I just visited your website, which I wish I had done earlier, and it has me rethinking my handle choice. In your gallery of canvas and burlap laminates, what is the material in picture 16? I'm really digging that stuff.

If it was the one I think you are referring to, those are some canvas twists. I can do something similar, No problem. Does that sound correct? Let me know if that is right, or send me an email and I will be happy to quote you and work something up. In fact, have some twists in green and brown up for sale just now in the supplies section

thanks,

-Todd

Danny, this is one I've not used. It's layered black and green linen.

After looking at what you have for sale, I'm honestly not sure. I couldn't find the actual web location of the material I was referring to last night, but did manage to figure it out this AM. Here is what I was talking about:

Of these three pairs, I really like the one on the right.
